Race: Helmets and Hardhats, Tampa, FL
Distance: 5K/10K (I did the 10K)
Date/Time: 9/28/02 8:45AM
Weather: 81F/88% humidity, sunny and hazy
Course: flat out/back on city streets, FULL sun, NO shade, NO breeze
Awards: no AG awards, but medals to top 50 men and women in each race

Time: 55:07 (10K PR)
Pace: 8:53
Place: 19th woman, 69th OA

I'd planned this as an expensive hard run rather than a race, and my goal was an average pace of 8:45 - 9:00.

The race got off to a late start, and right away I knew the extra heat and sun were going to hurt. By mile 1 I knew I'd gone out much too fast. I tried to slow down but somehow ran faster the second mile. By then I felt the usual punishment for going out too fast (tired, hot, stomach in big distress, etc). I couldn't seem to slow down enough to recover, and I started to think about walking. I'd never before walked during a race, but I wasn't racing. Still, it was an unpleasant decision. Just past mile 3 I slowed to a walk. Within 15 seconds a guy ran up and urged me to start running again. Thanks to him I was able to run most of the rest of the course, though I did walk a couple more times.

In all I walked about 3 minutes. I met my pace goal and scored a 10K PR by 54 seconds, and I also walked. Feels weird.

Anyway, here are splits:

8:13
8:08
8:37
9:08 (walked ~ 15s)
9:48 (walked ~ 2min)
9:19 (walked ~45s)
1:51

Good for you Joplus! You walked away with some hardware and you learned something in the process.

Joplus, you did a great job! It sounds to me like you accomplished what you wanted to. Met you goal pace, got a new PR, and bought home some hardware. Cool Not to mention the experience you gained will help you when it comes time to "race" and not just train. Congrats!!!!

Good job joplus! Don't sweat the walking thing. I had a similar experience.
My best 5k race time of the summer I stopped and walked several times. I don't know for how long but it seemed like a while. I have since re-run the same course without walking and still cannot beat that time! dunno

well, there weren't many runners, so this wasn't as supergreat as it sounds... Wink

I was really impressed by the top female finisher, though. She ran a 40:42 and looked fresh as a daisy doing it, also looked like she runs a zillion miles a week. And she's a couple of age groups older than I am (there is hope as we get older, then)!

Great job JP!
Keep it up and next year you will just blow away that time!
Hot and nasty weather like that takes its toll on everyone so don't get discouraged!
