I have a hard time hearing people over back ground noise. Is this normal?
If a faucet is running and someone is talking to me, I have a hard time making out what they are saying. Exhaust fans (i.e. bathroom or kitchen) have the same effect too.

I'm not great at that either. Put it down to age, and having a lot on our minds that makes us less able to concentrate.

Too much rock music in your youth John.
I am not sure really. Can you hear people normally or do you find yourself making people repeat themselves.

Huh?
I read something somewhere that what you're describing could be due to loud music in your youth. Different tones are affected by different types of damage and it's very possible that you suffered some without realizing it. My roomie has problems at certain levels as well.....plus he has tinnitus which is really a nuisance. Have you been to an audiologist and had a true hearing test to see where the deficiencies are?

I can hear OK if there's minimal background noise. Moderate levels of 'white' noise really give me a problem though.

my brother is 43 and has this problem, actually has a certain amount of hearing loss confirmed by the doctor. He worked in a UPS facility, lots of noise, loading packages onto trailers. I think he spent about 8 years doing that, and this is the direct result.

My husband always says I need my hearing checked. I have a very hard time hearing when there's background noises...
Especially right at this freaking moment. The gas company is right outside my store jack hammering the frozen pavement. I'm going to loose my mind today!!!

I've been teaching myself how to lip read to survive in social situations when there's a lot of background noise.
Cartoons are a horrible way to practice lip reading.
I've also taught my dog some basic sign language--and she responds to that better than verbal commands.

I'm sorry, what did you say?
I have a hard time hearing with background noise, too. It's really bad on the phone (especially cell phones) because there is noise going on all around me. I always have to ask people to repeat themselves. I am sure that is not irritating.

I'm easily distracted. Joy tells me that I tend to wander off during group discussions...:joel sees funny dust ball on desk and giggles:

I was reading Greg's quiz earlier and some of this stuff is more about a psychological profile:
4. I set the volume on the television louder than others would like. (My dad does this because he DOESN'T want to hear us)
7. I can not hear a digital watch or alarm clock beep.--It's because I'm sleeping and it's too dang early!
9. I have trouble following a conversation with 2 or more people involved. Ok, so I'm easily distracted like Shelfie
10. I find myself avoiding social events. Ok, so Idon't want to go to another dinner with people from your office it's not because I can't hear them, it's because I don't like them!
15. I reply to people inappropriately because I misunderstand what they say---So, everyone in Joisey ISN'T out to get me???
It is a little disconcerting getting older and not being able to hear as well. Mr. Aire has the same trouble I do.

I cannot deal with conversations in public places were there is any kind of music. Very frustrating.
