Hello everyone I'm new to the board....anyway I enjoy running I run at least 10 miles every other day, but I have yet to run in an actual race, I guess that I'm not sure how I would do because I usually run with my headphones on. the only other time I ever ran without them was when I was in the military and that was eons ago...so does anyone have a bit of advice on how to let go of the headphones?

What part of PA you from?

We have a bunch of peeps here from the 'Burgh area, and quite a nice crowd in the Philly area.

As for the headphones, when I ran I ran with them, the only time I ditched them was in the rain or when I ran with a partner, or the batteries were dead

I've run with headphones in a race. dunno If the entry form doesn't say that they aren't allowed, then I assume they are. i usually stick to small races though (<200 people), so I can't give advice for larger races.

This is the part where someone tells everyone that you shouldn't wear headphones unless you are on a treadmill.

They are dangerous. Particularly if you are female. Also, if you are a somewhat serious runner - they impede your ability to maintain your focus while training and racing. And 99.9% of all races don't allow them for insurance purposes.

I personally do not use them, for my running i spend most of my running time with a group and talking, so no need for them. for races i am paying attention to pace and hrm and that keeps my brain occupied enough.

for my skating the only time i use them is the week long bike/skate ride, i'll use 1 earbud in my right ear, leaving my left ear open for traffic and other active enthusiasts. 60 miles a day can be monotonous solo. I just do not feel that it is safe taking away one of the "awareness" senses like that.

I don't use them. It takes away one of you senses. Mostly used for cars but also bad for self defense situations.

I run every run with the headphones and I have run one race with them. Like PH, the race was very small and I wanted the radio for the company. I only put one of the ear buds in, so that I can (hopefully) hear traffic out of the other ear. I also run early in the morning, so there is almost no traffic.

I understand that racing with headphones is taboo, but I have never seen anyone pulled out of a race for wearing them. You just have to be more aware of what is going on around you.

I simply don't wear them. My feeling is they are a definite hazard and I watch out for headphone wearers just as I do for cars, bikes and dogs. The number of times I've seen headphone wearers totally oblivious to situations going on around them amazes me. But to each their own.

And I've never seen anyone pulled from a race wearing them either.

I'm fascinated by the number of people calling headphones a hazard. Have you ever tried wearing headphones in a race?

I run with headphones almost every day. I run across city streets, down sidewalks, through crosswalks, all while listening to music. I can hear traffic just fine, thank you very much.

The Sony Sports in-ear headphones are nice because they're ridiculously light, and they don't plug your ear like ear buds or block your entire ear like regular headphones. I've used these for years:

I can hear well enough to carry on a conversation while I'm listening to my headphones. I can hear cars just fine, and paying attention doesn't hurt, either. I run on bike paths all the time where tons of bikes will come up behind me and pass me on the narrow path. I've never had a problem hearing them coming, and I have my music pretty loud sometimes.

If you listen to the same music for a couple days, you can easily determine your pace without a watch, too.

I also wear earmuffs sometimes in the winter. Does that make me a bad person?
