i agree with BadBatsuMaru. i can hear just fine with headphones, and i usally run on sidewalks in populated areas so i'm perfectly safe.
so many people insult headphones 
i can't stand running without them, or else i concentrate on other noise, like my breathing, which screws up my running and endurance...
wearing headphones keeps me going, but hey, whatever floats your boat
