Is there any sports venue that can top the Alpe de Huez? In 1997 I rode the climb twice on race day. The energy on the road made the climb seem easy. In 1990 I gave Davis Phinney a push. That year he wasn't scheduled to do the Tour because his wife was having their first child their young boy was born a bit early. So his team had Davis fly over to Europe to ride the Tour. That day on the Alpe he was fihting to make the time cut. The name of their first child was Taylor. some years later a young Taylopr Phinney rode the Alpe de Huez with Davis' former teammate Steve Bauer.

Every cycling fan must ride and watch the race up the Alpe de Huez at least once in their lifetime. In 1993 the race didn't go up the Alpe. My friend and I rode up and it started snowing on us in July. We were shivering at the top. We went in a gift shop to get warm.I almost went to a hotel to buy a shower to get warm.
