Big mix-up to blame for bio-terror scare near the Medical Center
ABC13 Eyewitness News
(3/31/04 - HOUSTON) — An annual tradition for a group of runners won't be taking place next year after they caused a hazardous materials scare that shut down parts of the Medical Center.
Police were first called out to the Medical Center after people reported seeing a woman leaving a trail of white powder. It turns out the powder was just baking soda and was part of game called 'The Hound and Hare'. Runners were to follow the white lines.
But until hazardous materials crews could determine what the substance was, a five block area was closed off and METRO's light rail train stopped running. Patients at hospitals were even rerouted to other entrances.
"We had to make them aware that because of 9/11 we can't do this -- lay this powder out," said Al Giraldo with the Houston Police Department.
The students will not face any criminal charges.

This is frippin ridiculous!!!
And meanwhile, at the Port of Houston, yet another barge full of some contraband was probably unloading at the very same time they were worried about the baking soda!

But if someone else came by pouring vinegar everywhere, there'd be heck to pay!

The same thing happened here in October of '01! One of the Austin Hashers was marking the course with flour when a woman called the cops on him. It made the paper.
