Today is Jimmy Carter's 80th birthday. One of the finest human beings who has used his status to better the world and share his good fortune very unselfishly. A model Christian and Southerner, IMHO. Wishing him many more pleasant birthdays.

Never a fan of his presidency, but he has done great work in his years after his term. A true American indeed

I thought he was a great president, certainly the best president in my lifetime, who got shafted. Perhaps history will remember. A great man: Nobel Prize winner, Habitat for Humanity advocate, and fantastic author.

All I can say is that I hope he continues to build Habitat homes.

Happy Birthday, Big J!!!!
I think he was the last president who was dumb enough to level with the American people. He told us that we had systemic problems that needed fixing. He told us that we should do things like turn down the thermostat and start trying to conserve resources, like the rest of the planet does.
And for that he was dumped for a guy who knew how to play the spin game far better than Carter could ever dream of doing. And its been that way ever since--on both sides of the aisle. Don't level with the people on crucial issues when you're much better off politically just maintaining a dumbed down story and sticking with it, come hell or high water.
And that's not just a Bush slam, simply the sad truth.

At least he didn't blatantly fund them or put them into power.

No real opinions, I was born during his presidency but he's really involved with Habitat for Humanity and I used to know his grandson when I was in college, seems like a good family.

There was enough expansion of government jobs in his administration that I was able to land one. And through that, I met my wife.
I will get even.
Really, though, I've seen him a couple times at talks he's given. While he had a mixed record (good ideas on the environment, the Egypt-Israel peace, and the need for energy conservation - bad on the economy and the hostages), I thought on the whole he was a good president. Great, no. But we've had worse before and since.
Best wishes, Mr. President.

In terms of furthering international human rights, he's one of the people I look up to the most. HB, JC, long may you run.
