I had not a lot of hopes for this race, since I've been so sick. But with a late start (12:30) and the chance to eat, drink, and more importantly, WAKE UP before a race, I figured I'd give it a whirl. Drove 30 minutes to NJ to Veteran's Park and did indeed see people who looked hungover, like the t-shirt:

After exchanging words with the lunatic parked next to me who, despite having an Explorer built for 20 with running boards everywhere, felt the need to remove the dirt from her shoes by KICKING HER SHOES ON TOP OF MY BACK BUMPER Evil or Very Mad (WTF - where do these people come from?), I met two very nice people, Peter and Maureen, and had a nice chit chat while waiting for the race to start. At 36 degrees with the windchill, I was a bit cold in black tights and thin long-sleeved pumpkin orange race shirt.

BANG! The gun went off, and we headed down into the park. As usual many people passed me initially, but I knew it was good because I'd overcome some of them later. I hit mile 1 uneventfully and fast, and very surprised because the start was crowded due to the narrow road. At 1.25 we veered off the asphalt into the woods, and ran a quarter mile through the woods - grass, dirt, rocks, tree roots, water, mud, and all. Another quarter mile we switched to a half mile of boardwalk, then at mile 2 back onto asphalt. We went up an elevated pass between a lake and an open field - truly a spectacular sight. Mile 3 came and went quickly, and I knew I had a PR. Settled in to enjoy the ride. Started to feel the effects of the effort but said Suck it up, wuss, just another 15 minutes or so. Show us what you can do. Suck. It. Up. Went up a steep yet short hill, looked up and saw a car. Only a few feet in front of me. Despite me running on the far shoulder. Despite this being a "closed to traffic" course.

Mile 4 snaked back around, and I could clearly see all the people behind me. A lot of people. Kicked it up when I knew I was near the finish line (though I did have to scream WHERE IS IT? because it was hard to tell - people were strolling everywhere). Ran through the chute wearing a gross shirt I'd repeatedly used as a tissue and a huge smile on my face. Saw Peter in the finisher's area and chatted briefly over water and bagels, comparing stories. Never saw Maureen who by the results finished way ahead of both me and Peter. Left NJ to go eat - I was hungry and I'd earned it. Very Happy

Final: 50:40, 10:08mm pace, 344/412 finishers, beating 17% of the pack. Splits - 9:52, 10:16, 10:27, 10:17, 9:48. Best points: running on 3 surfaces in one picturesque race, PR by 79 seconds, everyone I passed STAYED BEHIND ME Mr. Green , felt the best I have in weeks, demonstrated I still have a decent amount of sustainable speed. Bring on 2004 - I'm ready.

Most excellent job, you beat me by 21 seconds!

Downside to my race, I got my new kicks dirty. I hate dirty shoes.
