Cheese-chase race to bring blood and gore to Gore
30 January 2006
By MATHEW LOH HO-SANG
An ancient English tradition involving pursuit, danger and injury is about to churn up a South Island hill outside Gore (New Zealand).
No, it's not fox hunting or jousting, but the centuries-old sport of cheese rolling.
For hundreds of years, competitors have trekked to Cooper's Hill in Gloucester to race 200m down a steep hill chasing a giant wheel of cheese.
The winner gets the cheese and the glory, but injuries are common. Last year's Cooper's Hill champion broke his ankle and two others were taken to hospital with suspected spinal damage. Yet despite the risk, Kiwis are lining up for Gore's Whitestone Cheese Rolling Festival on February 12. Organiser Simon Berry said the charity event would take place on a 100m hill on a farm in Southland's Wendon Valley.
"In testing, the cheese was beating the chasers down the hill, so it should be a good race," he said.
The course also required a "tough cheese".
"We're rolling 4kg Windsor Blues and the first few we tried disintegrated, so we needed to fix that up."
Highlanders and All Black hooker Anton Oliver will be joining in. Marc Ellis, who won a celebrity roll at Cooper's Hill in 2004, is a no-show, said Berry. "We reckon he's too scared of the Southland thistles."

Yeah, please sign me up first for anything that promises "suspected spinal damage".

I believe that's a rugby position (or maybe an Aussie Rules Football position)

"The winner gets the cheese and glory" - I think I've got a new slogan for Mad City!

Heck, that's the slogan for our next Riff Raff Tee.

You are correct that it is a rugby position.
He is the man in the middle of the scrum (the big pack you see during matches) and it is his job to try and toe the ball to the back of his side of the scrum while his teammates drive forward to help move the ball backwards.
That was one of the few positions I didn't try at least once while playing at college.
