someone refresh my memory..
isn't it 220-age to get maximum heart rate or is it 80% of that to be the maximum?
my heart rate seems way too fast.

That is a ballpark estimate and more geared for non-athletes.
Here is one that takes into account your resting HR http://www.home.connectnet.com/eoinf/heartrate.html
But the best is still a physical test, usually running uphill several times until your about to fall over

If you own a heart rate monitor than the best way to get an accurate number is to go out and do the Max. HR test like TriBob described.
Calculators can be too far off.

I agree with PH and Tribob. My calculated MHR was 190, My real MHR is 175. Quite a difference. It takes me about Eight hill reps (about 1/4 mile long) to get near my MHR.

My max heart rate higher than the calculators say it should be. The Oaster brothers are very close to my age and their's is way below mine. People are just different.

Mine is like 15 beats lower. I would never be able to do a tempo work out at recommended ranges I would blow up. Get the monitor and do a couple of really mean hill repeats until you almost puke and see how high you go. Set it from there.

hey thanks for the info and website.
so, i did a three-mile pace run and my HR immediately after stopping was at the low end of the maximum range on the website Tri-bob listed. it just seems a bit much to have 168 beats per minute but that is what is considered the Max VO2??
i'm thinking i wouldn't want to do a MAXVO2 workout any more than once a week?

If you can't get to a lab to have your VO2max tested, here's a field test that should work nicely.
Run 1.5 miles then put your time in the following equation:
VO2max (mL.kg.min) = 3.5 + 483/(time in min)
This will get your estimated VO2max. Then there's a whole bunch of other equations to get your actual VO2max in Liters per minute, and then from that how many Kcals you burn per minute of exercise, and how many pounds that translates too, and so on.

220 minus my age (43) is 177.
Using the website info that TriBob gave:
209-(.7*age) = 178.9
I think I have another formula in one of my books. Just gotta go search.

OK, I found five different formulae to determine HRmax, and I think it shows something kinda interesting about the whole subject. That being that not even those folks that do research in this area can agree on something so simple. I'll use my age in all these examples (since I know what it is), so you guys can get an idea of the disparity.
HRmax =
1. 220 - 43 = 177
2. 205 - 21.5 (1/2 age) = 183.5
3. 226 - 43 = 183
4. 206.3 - (.711*43) = 175.727
5. 217 - (.85*43) = 180.45
The other day when I actually wore my HRM, and was actually running pretty hard, I saw that my HR was 185.
Just a little food for thought.
