There's two issues here:
1st)Tochet financed an illegal sports book - that's a crime regardless of whether or not they bet on hockey and God forbid, their own games. The goal here was to make money, illegal money, untraceable money.
2nd)hockey players, through janet jones, illegally bet on sports (footbal mostly) If the players caught up in this wanted to legally bet on sports - there are legal sports books in Vegas. Whether the NHL approves of that I don't know

prohemp - the NHL doesn't have a policy on other sports. simply no betting on hockey. based on that, the guys would technically be allowed to bet on other sports without punishment.

It would seem so Blue - but they are technically betting illegally because the sports book is illegal. The first aticle I read about it referred to jones as a go between - she could hold the key in naming names - i.e. she know who gave her the bet but passes it on to the book under another name to keep their identity protected.
....wait and see.............

janet gretzky released a statement saying she never placed any bets in Wayne's name, and Wayne never placed any bets himself.
wayne had a conference (more like a statement) later and said (again) that he has never been involved, isn't involved, and won't be involved - and that if they had any questions, they should ask the people that are involved.
in the meantime, i made a point of pasting my local newspaper for running misleading headlines about a hockey legend based on speculation alone. i'm expecting the letter to be printed in tomorrows paper...

I can't imagine a marriage where 500k is spent--illegally--and the other party has no clue.

i can't imagine having 500K to spend illegally. how's that for perspective 
wayne lives in phoenix most of the year with one son (the oldest i think). janet lives in LA with the other three kids. that's hard enough as it is. he's gone for like 7 months of the year (heaven forbid the coyotes ever make the playoffs )

well, I'm not sure if it was alln Gretzky's money...It was just how much total was spent.
And, if you can't drop a cool half mil without your spouse freaking out about it....well, you just ain't hip.
