anyone catching wind of this? i think trekay and i are the only hockey fans on the board.

but there's a pretty big betting ring scandal going on. involving gretz's assistant coach (on charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and another...), gretz's wife (who has placed bets), and a NJ State Officer (friends with the assistant coach) who was under investigation that led to all of this.

anyhoo, gretzky hasn't even been implicated yet and the media is running his name all over the place under a lot of "what if's" etc.

he's already said "i wasn't involved, i'm not involved, and i won't be involved"... i'm pretty sure it's true. but this sucks right now.

just sharing. it's a big deal over here right now.

I was watching all of this on Sportscenter last night.

Wow.

What are your feelings? Should peeps in sports be allowed to bet on sports?

I think the NFL here is the only one with that type of prohibition.

It's been all over ESPN/ESPN Radio the last couple of days. Gretzky IS hockey. I cannot think of another NHL player more 'hockey' than he is. If it comes out that he is involved directly, which could lead to Lemieux even, the hockey world won't know what to do with themselves, IMO.

It would be very demoralizing for some of the fans.

Although, the cynic in me ASSUMED this stuff was already going on in EVERY sport. Would I be so wrong?

oh it is going on for sure.

the problem isn't that it's betting - the NHL policy is "no betting on hockey". it's *illegal* betting... that's the issue. goes into tax evasion and all that (among other more serious charges).

the big big thing is trying to hang on to the fact that gretzky still hasn't been directly implicated. we know it's press fodder, and that's part of what sickens me.

if he did something - that would be really bad. i can't estimate how i would feel, because i still don't expect it to happen.

i'm sure his wife did, the other guy obviously did.

but we're days away from the olympics, this guy bleeds his heart for the country and sport - and it's really shameful to see him being brought into this entirely on speculation. Neutral

Its big news in these parts since Tocchet was a player here and lives as well

As long as the players didn't bet on their own sport, who cares

No, the guy on Sportscenter said something about the NFL being the only sport here in America with a prohibition against betting. (I took it to mean on ALL sports). I probably misunderstood.

i'm mostly just mad that he's constantly being mentioned. if they had info on janet, they'd have info on wayne. no bones about it.

as long as he wasn't passing on information pertaining to hockey, then it's all good in my mind. and hopefully in the laws mind.

i guess criminal activity is criminal activity. but if it doesn't have to do with the sport, it doesn't affect my view of him and where he stands with the game.

not a good year for wayne... hopefully the olympics go well. Sad

Yep Blue I have been following it, yes much in shock. I just hope Gretzky himself wasn't involved, definetly would put a huge hit on the NHL, but I don't know after reading this story: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2324402

it just says he knew... not when. or how. or what he was saying. i wish we had more info... this is going to take months to figure out.

or until janet gets on the news and says wayne had nothing to do with it. Confused

well, sure guys in sports bet, and if it is on other sports, I guess I have no problem with it.

This guy...is an assistant coach, and is running a "gambling ring"? I don't know what that means...but, probably not too smart a thing to do.

Didn't Rick Neuheisal lose him job at Washington because he was in a very expensive "March Madness" pool?

People in these positions cannot afford to be involved in this type of stuff.
