Greetings from the Penguin Press [a division of Penguin Group USA] -

I noticed your review of 'Founding Brothers' on amazon.com, and thought you
might be interested in a related book.
Ron Chernow's 'Alexander Hamilton' will be published soon in hardcover by
Penguin. You can read all about it on the amazon page:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1594200092/qid=1081351156/sr=1
-1/ref=pd_ka_1/103-3203202-4528648?v=glance&s=books

If you are interested in an advance reading copy of Alexander Hamilton, just
respond to this e-mail with a mailing address, and I will get a copy off to
you right away.
No gimmicks, no obligations. If you like the book, just help us spread the
word.

Thanks for your time.

All best,
John Lawton
Penguin Group USA

Sweet!

Is that common practice? Is it ethical? I consider it smart marketing by Penguin, so from the big picture perspective it is indeed schaweeet. Hopefully just the first of many gratis books.

Not only smart marketing, but FREE BOOKS!

Though I'd get a P.O. Box for them, JIC.

A couple months ago i recieved and ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) from St Martin's Press and Gayle Lynds of her novel "The Coil". This isn't much different. It is standard practice to send ARCs to reviewers to spread the word through newspapers and magazine reviews, less so to online reviewers that do not own their own website (i would imagine), but because of the popularity of Amazon.com, i guess some Publishers are taking advantage of the potential for positive reviews.
