Clown mask robber charged (source - Chicago Tribune, March 10)

Federal charges have been filed against a man who was wearing a clown mask when he robbed a North Side bank and tried to get away Thursday, the FBI said today.

The suspect was charged with armed bank robbery, said FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates. She said more details, including the suspect's identity, would be released later today.

An off-duty Chicago police officer in a bank Thursday became suspicious of a man who entered the building wearing a clown mask, police said.

Officer Kelly Davis was in the Chase Bank branch at 1700 N. Wells St. on personal business about 9 a.m. when he noticed a man walk in wearing a black poncho and the mask, Supt. Philip Cline said in a news conference at police headquarters Thursday.

Davis, who was not armed, exited the bank and used his cell phone to call for additional officers, said police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Inside the bank, the masked man brandished what appeared to be an Uzi-style weapon and demanded cash, police said. He left the bank and fled on a bicycle. Davis gave chase on foot, arrested him about two blocks away and held him until other officers arrived.

The money, and a plastic replica gun, was recovered, police said. The man was brought back to the bank, where customers and employees identified him as the alleged robber.

Tribune staff reporters Dan Blake and Andrew Wang contributed.

Must've been pretty useless if he only got two blocks before being caught by someone who chased him down on foot.

I think I read somewhere that when he first walked in the tellers said, "Who's this clown?"

I was busy being a husband.

I'm happily married.

Or so my wife tells me.

Yes. This one slipped right by. After all, the culprit did try to get away on a bike.

Well done!
