I'm applying to graduate school shortly and have to take the GRE. I haven't taken a test of any kind in years. What is the best method to study for the GRE. And particularly good software on the market?
Also I hear the test is being changed somewhat and lengthened from 2.5 to 4 hours.

I took it years ago. I took a course to help me with the math. I did way better in math. The course was good b/c it taught me all sorts of shortcuts. If you were to get a book and actually be serious and disciplined about practicing, you'd probably be fine.
Call your local Stanley Kaplan and make them sell you on the class. Then don't sign up for the class and instead apply what you've learned toward your book and be really disciplined about it.
What do you want to go to school for?

You can find everything you need to know here: http://www.ets.org.
I'm debating on whether I am going to take it. The grad school I want to attend doesn't require it unless undergrad GPA is below 3.0, so I'm going to be fine in that respect. I'm more worried that I will suck out loud and the school will decline me based on my GRE scores, regardless what my GPA is.
I did get the GRE for Dummies. Great book.
Good luck!

I want to get the GRE out of the way before the "new" tests begin in the Fall of 2007.
The particular graduate program I'm going into at Georgia Tech does require the GRE although since it's not an engineering program the score may not carry quite as much weight, but I don't want to look like a dummy either, even if I do end up using "GRE For Dummies".
I'm looking at starting the graduate program next Fall. I would like to take the GRE in December but may hold off until February depending on how difficult I find the practice tests.

After researching the subject a bit, I'm taking part of GoGo Girl's advice. I'm taking one of their free lectures on the class option.
I've also ordered a couple of GRE books, one specifically for math from Amazon. Registration deadline for the Fall 2007 Graduate studies is March 1. I have to make sure I take the test so the score has time to reach the Institute.
"
The books I ordered from amazon were "Barrons' How to Prepare for the GRE review with CD Rom" and "The Ultimate Math Refresher" Both received mostly postive readers reviews. Depending how comfortable I feel after using these books I'll determine if I think I need to spend the $1200 for Kaplan's class instruction.
