From what I've read, his resignation is not effective until November. He is continuing his "political drama" unneccesarily in my opinion. If he truly wanted to end the spectacle, he could resign his position effectively immediately.

But I agree with Sonny. McGreevey came out to avoid blackmail that was the result of some extremely poor choices he made. The choice involved putting someone he was sleeping with in a very responsible, sensitive, well-paid position for which that someone had no experience.
I think his coming out was designed to ensure the public would overlook all that. |
and since the public is not so gullible, we are seeing that the gay spin on it doesn't really make a difference. some op-ed stuff I read yesterday indicates that a lot of people see it for what it is: patronage, blackmail, political scandal, etc. I'm sure this isn't the first time that some poorly qualified lover (male or female) was awarded a position in gov't. It also appears that the November date was given in hopes it would keep the Democratic party in place in NJ beyond the election.
Eliminate the gay thing, and he's like any other politician. HOWEVER, I still stand by my opinion that coming out or being forced out is a major life event. He had the balls to do it, even if it was politically motivated, it will make a big difference for the man on a personal level.

I don't disagree with you, Kelt. It's huge, and I find it encouraging that a poll of 400 New Jerseyites said that his statements last week didn't change how they felt about him.
He is like any other politican--that's the point I'm trying to make here. It's incredibly brave to come out to the world live on TV, but I don't believe it was done so much for the sake of coming out as it was done as a strategy.
