anyone have some good running goals, or interesting strategies planned for 2003?

I read some fun ones in a running magazine (that most of us don't care to read). I kinda liked this one: Put a quarter in a bank for every 15 minutes that you run! Should be a nice hunk of change in no time.

999 Miles this year. If I break it, I will have gone a thousand for the first time in a few years.

2003:

2003 miles combined, running, cycling, and swimming. Maybe tough to do, but its a goal. The higher end of the mileage I want to be Cycling.

I would like to do a triathlon this year, but there are no too many in close proximity to my house.

Overall, I would just like to have an injury free year, and have fun doing whatever I do.

Avoid major injuries (2 this year Sad )
Lose 10 pounds
Beat my first Oly Tri time by 30 minutes
Complete a 1/2 Ironman in September
Break 4 hours in fall marathon

3 out of 5 will be good Smile

Extra credit, BQ. I get another 5 minutes this year for aging up. I just don't think I can take that much running though.

OK, I've been thinking and calculating, and looking at my running log. Here's my rough draft for my goals; feel free to offer your thoughts.

1) Avg 15 miles per week for a total of 780 miles for the year
2) a sub 23:00 5k
3) a 52:00 10k (never ran this distance)
4) a 1:55 half marathon (never ran this distance)

Now here's how I arrived at these goals: I averaged 8 miles per week for each of the 45 weeks I was able to run (some weeks were off due to injury and most of January was off because I didn't start running until the last week of that month) I had several weeks in the summer where I was able to get in 20 mpw. So the goal is a 5 mile increase in the avg, but not an increase over my best weeks in the summer.

I ran my first 5k ever in 29:00 in march. In October I ran my 5k in 24:59 meeting my goal of a sub 25 5k. I figure there's a curve in the improvement so shaving 4 minutes off doesn't seem do-able but shaving another 2 minutes off may be realistic.

I've never raced at the 10k or half-mary distance. I want to get those distances in this year. I have done many runs at 5-6 miles, and the times I've chosen are from a pace calculator using my best 5k time.

I am approaching my 1st full year of running. I hope I've set realistic goals here, so please chime in with feedback.

Absolute top #1 priority is to remain injury free. Every other goal should fall into place if I can meet this goal.

Running :: 2000 miles. Figured as an avg. of 40 MPW for 50 weeks. Very doable if I can remain injury free.

Race goals ::
  • 5K :: 17:30 (5:38 pace)
  • 10K :: 37:30 (6:02 pace)
  • Half marathon :: 1:30 by mid-October (6:52 pace)
  • marathon :: ? dunno (sub 3:00 HA! I can dream can't I?)

Cycling :: 6000 miles figured as 120 MPW for 50 weeks. Again, very doable if I remain injury free although I may need to do more trainer riding during bad weather. Sad Become a better climber. Ride at least one century.

Swim :: dunno Just don't know. The Y pool will close for 3-4 months so I can't even come close to guessing how far I'll swim this year. I'm considering making this a "go to the pool X times per week" goal instead of a distance goal. My biggest problem isn't the distances, it's the getting to the pool part that is hurting me.

Strength :: As if I haven't said this one enough already...Squat my body weight x 1.7 for 6 reps. Currently at 75% of that goal already. Bench 250 lbs. Every other lift - continue to increase the weights.

Weight :: Stay below 170 because I don't want to drag any more weight that I have to around with me yet I want to remain strong.

Duathlon/Triathlon :: Actually race a few times this year. Zero races for me in 2003. Duathlon cancelled due to injury and no tris because I couldn't swim well enough to compete.

This motivated me to pour over my running log which really underscored how valuable logging runs (consistantly) can be.

For next year, I definitely want to become more technical about running. I started running in May and up until about September was trying to overcome many new runner obstacles, namely injuries and nutrition.

Primarily, I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in May. I'm increasing the long run distance by a mile each month. By May, which will be my peak month, I'll be around 47 miles a week. Each week, it's intended that I do a "quality" run, that's hill, repeats, race, tempo runs. I've been pretty good about doing tempo runs, but need to get hill runs into my training, and by Spring I will be spending time at the track to do my speedwork.

My goals are as follows:

I want to beat my first 5K time (25min and 8 seconds) I clocked last June at Sun Burst. I really, really want to break that. I want to run it in 24 or under.
10K, break my 1st 10K time (52:50). I want to run that in 50 minutes or under.
Run a half marathon at around the time Keltic is striving for, around 1 hour 54 minutes. I'd like to do that a bit faster, but, who knows, I also am trying to be realistic here. I also plan on running my first marathon next year! So excited about that.

I think I can get in over 1000 miles next year. That will be a great accomplishment.

I guess to achieve all of this, I'll keep listening to the great advice I've gotten since the beginning of all this craziness from John, my running mentor, and now all of you too! Thanks! Smile

My mileage goal for '03 is 1500 miles. I didn't get off my rear this year and start running (& quit smoking) until late Feb, eary March. Now that I have started a consistent training program, I think 1500 is reasonable.

For races, I want to finish Madtown Marathon ~3:50, run the Kettle 20k with Rando, Run the Foxcities Marathon ~3:40. These may be a bit of a stretch but I would rather have high goals to reach for than sand bag and not challenge myself.

I have started to keep a better eye on my nutrition this year and my goal for that is to lower my Cholesterol to an acceptable level (what that is I haven't determinded yet. I would also like to get back into strength training. I haven't done too much this december.

haven't decided the direction I'm going yet....since I was suppose to retire from marathoning

Goals one of the 3

1)improve marathon time.....go sub 1:25 for 1/2

or

2)sub 38 for 10k

or

3)become nationally ranked duathlete

for the first time in my life I actually wish I were younger so I could have all 3. I realize that at my age....I can only go in one direction before I stop improving Neutral

I'm not making any specific race goals for next year, mainly because every time I do, the running gods see fit to give me some sort of attitude adjustment, usually in the form of injuries or major distractions. I need most to work on my mental training, I know I can run, albeit slowly, but I cave too easily mentally and crack under the pressure I put on myself, which makes running, something I love, really miserable. So I guess my primary goal is to learn to lighten up and run for ME and nothing else, and work on the mental stuff. If I can get back up to 35 mpw then I can think about "real" training. Flarunner said it well in another post, I am a runner, it's what I do. Regardless of how "well" by someone else's standards I do it, I AM a runner.

I'm only firmly committing to two races right now for the year: NERRC 10K in Philly in March and RW Half in May. I haven't decided what I am running in Madison yet. Probably the half or 10K, depending on how I do at RW. But I'm going. After that, we'll see what happens. I'm sure I'll add more when I am ready.
