I agree! What a cool thing for the troops, and it took some serious guts to do that. They didn't even release it to the media until he was in the air, on his way home.

Cue Lee Greenwood:

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.

I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And, I won't forget the ones who died
who gave that right to me.
And I'll gladly stand up
next to you
and defend her still today.
Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land...
God Bless the U.S.A.!

From the lakes of Minnesota
to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas
from sea to shining sea,
from Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.,
There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:

I'm proud to be an American

And, I won't forget the ones who died

Dubya is not my cup of tea. But his actions visiting the troops was nifty and very well done. Great job.

Wasn't Lee Greenwood a draft dodger? That's what I heard, I'm not sure if it's true or not.

As far as whether Lee Greenwood was a draft dodger - yes and no. He did not flee to Canada or any other country. He did, however, seek a 3A classification (hardship) for the draft in '69 when he was most eligible to be drafted, on the basis he had children. Thus, he avoided the draft and did not have to take any combat chances. Whether or not he was a draft dodger depends on how you interpret the term "draft dodger". Did he avoid the draft - yes; did he flee the country - no.

Good point - to dodge the draft vs. to avoid the draft.

Let's have a show of hands here. How many actually had a draft card during the Vietnam War? Sorry ladies, this is a "men only" affair. (And that's a whole 'nother deal.) Very few, right?

I had one. Did I avoid or dodge the draft? Nope. At least, I don't feel that I did. Wasn't worried about it because the war was winding down and troops were being pulled out of the country. The draft was still in effect and men were being drafted but not being sent to Vietnam. My draft number was high enough that I wasn't concerned about it. Okay...

Had my number come up, would I have gone in? Yes. Would I have been sent to Vietnam? No. Now, during this time that the draft was still in effect, I went to college. My draft status was not 1A. (Finally, he gets to the point...!) Because my draft status was not 1A, did I dodge the draft? Or, because of the fact that I went to college, did I avoid the draft?

If you want to demonize someone who went to college during the draft (and had a less-than 1A status), you say that they dodged the draft. We had that situation with Clinton. His detractors referred to him as a dodger. If that's how you feel, then you probably should refer to me as a dodger. It's the same thing. But....it gets trickier.

Because there was no chance of my being sent to Vietnam (had I been drafted), I doubt that there's anyone out there who thinks that I dodged nor avoided the draft. So, it's also a question of timing. Lee Greenwood gained his status in 1969. Baby, that was some serious time in 'Nam. I happen to think that he was right in applying for and getting that deferment. I don't consider him a dodger but, for good reason, he avoided the draft. Clinton? Avoider, too.

To me, it's more than a question of semantics. Avoid and dodge can mean the same thing here. But I lived during that time. I watched the news. I read the paper. And back then, a dodger was the guy who had a 1A status and, rather than get the status changed - for whatever purpose - chose to flee or remain hidden in the country. He was a draft dodger. There was no stigma attached back then to the guy who went into college to avoid being drafted AND being sent to Vietnam.

But that's just my $.02 worth. And boy, doesn't this go down kinda heavy after yesterday's festivities? Bummer. I think it's time for some pie. Smile

Hell, most of us here, weren't even born yet. I was born in 68. My father is Vietnam Vet, he was over in the earlier part of the war. He was right out of high school. He would have gone no matter what

Whippersnappers! Smile

And after my days in the academe, I volunteered and went into the Navy...Saigon hadn't fallen yet. There were guys in my boot camp company who got orders for Pacific Fleet duty and they were a tad worried...needlessly, though.

Not only did I have a draft card, when I went into the Marines, they were selecting draftees by birthday lottery. My number was in the 300's so I did not have to join but felt it my duty regardless of my personal feelings on the war.

What makes people leery of Greenwood's motives is his making his name writing/performing songs encouraging war efforts. Considering the fact he himself avoided/dodged (depending on your definition) it can be seen as somewhat hypocritical.

I don't have any opinions personally one way or the other on Greenwood's motives.
