Posted: 07/08/03 - 14:27 Post subject: Getting rid of mold??
Ok, we have a HUGE patchof mold on the dining room ceiling, right below the bathroom, so I know where the water source is located.
Question: It's fuzzy and blackish green and appears to be growing. WHen you try to scrape at it the paint comes with as well as some of the plaster. Any ideas? (We're in a lease-option and as part of it we do most of the maintenance. I think we'll drop it because of a few reasons, such as an imminent move AND the mold; no one wants an investment property with problems as an absentee landlord). But I'd like to get rid of this; I think it's one of the reasons my allergies are so bad.
Any thoughts?

Move. Quickly. Before it kills you. Once it's there, it's almost impossible to get rid of. PM me if you want; I know of what I speak: The Paramedic almost DIED because his office at a former employer was infested with it.

If you empty a can of lysol on it, you can kill it. How to get it off.... ask someone else. :

I would also be concerned about the source of the water. Are the pipes for the bathroom simply sweating or are they leaking? Either way, the leak should be stopped before the mold was removed. If the mold was removed and the leak not fixed, it would come right back.
If you decided to scrape it off and repaint the room, you can get mold resistant paint.

Check with your insurance company and see if you've got any coverage for mold remediation.
Sometimes it's enough of a health danger that ins. cos. will cover the removal, similar to asbestos abatement.

I guess I need to add that mold is naturally occuring and all that it needs to live is moisture, air and a food source (like the paper in the drywall). I personally think that lots of the mold remediation claims are bunk.

Thanks for the tips. I think the pipes themselves are leaking due to another plumbing problem in thebathroom we noticed. God knows we have bleach, Tilex and Lysol and I have some time.
Hopefully it's not a bigger issue like you and your SO's was Elkid!! That is horrendous. There have been a few cases here similar to that and most insurers here won't cover mold claims any longer. I realize that if you have humidity and a food source there is a possibility (and all the rain we have here does not help), but this does not look like your garden variety mold. If I had a digital camera I'd take a picture because it's pretty freaky looking!

I don't know anything but thats my thought. We have tons of them down here in the land of 100% humidity adn really, who doesn't have mold down here? Most of us are fine. There was a brief period where people would burn down their houses and everything in them if they saw what you did, K. I believe unless you have an allergy to garden variety mold, you're fine, and even if you do, kill it with bleach water as monk said and take some Zyrtec in the meantime. And find a plumber or someone who can stop the water source...otherwise you'll clean it up all over again!

Also, check the laws in your state but here, renters are entitled to a new paint job every couple of years on the landlord, so once you get the problem rectified, you can get it painted so it looks nice.
