I agree with you on this. Most of the stuff that's been implemented is "feel good" crap that's just costing us a lot of time and money. I just traveled through 3 airports twice. I know I look like a terrorist and all, but I've had to remove my shoes and jacket in each one, I've had my film x-rayed when I asked politely to have it hand inspected only and then was threatened to have it all confiscated. When my film was hand inspected, they swiped every roll with a cloth, only to find glycerine from my hand lotion. I was then detained, since glycerine is a component of nitro-glycerine. My husband and I BOTH had to strip down to our last layer of clothes, again remove our shoes, have everything re-x-rayed, we were interviewed by airport security, again I was threated with having my film, camera bag and carry-on confiscated, and I to sign a bunch of forms. In the end, the decided it was my hand lotion. Meanwhile, some yahoo gets weapons through the entire system and gets arrested for pointing out the flaws.

A lot of security is all show. The real solutions happens behind the scenes. I work in the town where it is all flash. People think that a police car infront of a building will deter a truck bomb or something.
Homeland security sucks basically. We still get little or no real information from people. If something happens they have all this great stuff at their disposal but it would take several hours to get it to be used.
It has gotten no easier to notify different agencies for things. Nothing has really changed. The FBI sends alerts all of the time but say be alert. So we are like for what?
A lot of responsibility is placed on the locals without a lot of real support.

I do contend that Bush has used the war on terror as a shield for other less successful initiatives. In doing so he's taken the national focus from itself to the "evil" world at large. Homeland Security has done nothing, and will continue to do nothing. Though I like that frenzy-stirring color alert system.

Ah, you have inside contacts that allow you to determine with 100% certainty that Homeland Security "has done nothing and will continue to do nothing". I've seen no more attacks on US soil so somebodys doing something right.
Got an example of how the evil world at large has deterred national focus from other prominent issues?

The only problem is that with no attacks we don't know if we just haven't had any attempts to attack us or that we have deterred or stopped attacks.
If we go 5+ years without an attack on us, i'll probably agree that someone is doing something right. We generally only find out about a department's failures rather than its sucesses, even if there have been 23,147 successes and one failure.

OL - Scary stuff.
sonny - a few un- or undersuccessful initiatives, but I could go on:
- proposed $46B in new spending on health, education, & defense
- the resulting No Child Left Behind act
- New Prosperity Initiative
- energy plan funded and advised on by Enron
- plan to make Amtrak more efficient and competitive
- accountability for gun law control violations
He also swept his weakening of the Clean Air Act under the carpet.
