Ok, heres a question, The manual says it will run for up to 15 hours on a charge, when mine was fully charged, it said it had a 12 hr charge, you say 13 hours. Is there a difference in them? Whats it suppossed to be?

things like temperture will have an effect on the charge of the battery. normally the colder the less. and extreme heat too. things like locking on to the satelite can also drain if you have heavy cloud cover or foilage.

I recall that claim, too. However, mine charges to 13 hours and another 201 owner (who may or may not refer to it as a watch and also shall remain nameless) has the same experience with her, uh, unit.

I just online manual. the wording is, and i quote, " the battery last as long as 15 hours."

i read that as a MAXIMUM possible charge. as in dont expect to use it for any 24 hour events, it won't last as long as you will then.

I just ordered one as a gift from Amazon last week.

Let me just say that I am exceptionally disappointed with Amazon.

There is a new software update out - 3.00 for those of you who wish to update your software. The logbook is not yet out BUT, part of the software update is so it can have better interface with the logbook so I think it is getting close to being out.

http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?product=010-00328-00

The software update took 2-3 minutes to complete.

Close? Hey, after all, we've been told that it'll be out in early February. I suppoe that there are only two parts of the month - early and late. So, let's see...this weekend will mark the middle of the month. Anytime after that will be late February. If not, well, it's already the middle of the month and not early.

Perhaps it would've been a better idea for Garmin just to take down e-mail addresses and then report (via that medium) when the software was ready.

All right. Looks like this has the makings of a contest - who'll be the first person to learn of the software and make the announcement?

You got that right. I've already downloaded the software. I'm waiting until my virus software completes its Friday night scan before opening the executable - probably another 30-40 minutes from now.

Edited for Saturday: The new software update permits doing run/walks during training 4 different ways. So today I'm doing 1 mile run/1 minute walks to test out the feature. Tomorrow I'll do 5 minute run/1 minute walks.

I'm definitely wearing this unit during next Saturday's Myrtle Beach marathon and see how it does.

Basic? Gee, I'm not sure what you think the software should do, but...

...it sure beats the hell out of turning on the unit and pushing buttons. With the software, you can view your running stats - as accumulated by the 201 - and view them a whole lot easier!

Granted, there isn't a lot that the software actually does, so in that regard, yes, it might be considered basic. But it's still a nice thing to have along with the 201.

If you are looking for the logbook to take the place of your current logbook for your runs, you are out of luck. But the logbook is very useful for recording your runs that you do on the Garmin Forerunner. I'm pretty certain there will be some further enhancements to both the software and logbook. But I'm very satisfied with their progress thus far. Stop and think for a moment. What other vendor permits you do download free upgrades to your GPS and or heart rate monitor units? Polar - no, Timex - no. In those cases as they make enhancements you have to buy a whole new watch or package, usually at a higher price.

Garmin has furnished a very inexpensive tool (and that's all it is, just a tool, same as HRMs) that really helps in some of our running goals. Is it perfect? No. Useful? Yes. Do I like their upgrades thus far, yes.

Would I buy my Garmin Foreunner 201 at the same price I paid for it originally even if no further enhancements were forthcoming. Sure.

For me, it has been the best money I have ever spent on any running tool/gadget.

Exactly. If you don't own the 201, the software is useless...at least, I don't know how you'd be able to get any data into it. That being the case, if you have the 201, it works fine. If you have the 201, why would you run without it? And if you don't have the 201, why not?

Sounds like it's time for a message to Garmin's product support. I can offer no help because mine worked like a champ...so far.
Give 'em a shout via e-mail or better yet, wait until tomorrow and talk to someone. My guess is that you'll get pretty good advice.
