Does the Garmin response get better from the initial 5-8 minutes? |
To answer that ? I ttok it out today for a five minute run, and it took just under a minute (standing still) to aquire a lock.
I tried out the auto lap feature today and came away impressed with the array of aday it gave me on a short 2 mile run.

in the Custom set up you can set one of the fields to be "clock time"
when switching the screen in the main mode you'll have the "training" screen, "cuctom" screen and "rest" screen to cycle thru.
my custom now is set up for Time of day, avg lap, and lap |
Thanks for the tip, I did see the actual clock in the main clock screen (top right corner).
But knowing you can set the clock as a custom option rocks also.
That makes 2 RR with the watch.

DAMN!!!!! the vitual guy beat me tonight.
After resting up ( in other words sittin on the couch and stuffing my face for two hours) i strapped on the skates and decided to play...er....test out the vitual runner. with 3 choices to pick from, i decided speed and time. i set the speed for 12.7MPH and chose the 30 minute option (built in)
well the little bugger needs no warm up!!! NOT FAIR so right away he is ahead of me, by mile 1.5 i catch him and pass him, but an uphill, he passes me. we play this game for the 6.35 miles until the 30 mins are up and he is 41 feet ahead of me.
i did find it hard to work the buttons even with much smaller gloves on for this though. but in actuality i should have left the unit alone for this anyway. i see lots o'fun with this as well as lots of improvement. ain't technology grand??
Scorch, i'll have to look for the clock display i missed it

I have been very disappointed in the Timex Bodylink GPS unit. It seems to lose the satellite signal very easily. How well is this unit able to keep a satellite signal. Does it get weak among tall buildings (downtown areas) or when running on trails that have tree cover?
Update Sunday, Dec 21: Well, after reading the reviews here and doing some google searches I went ahead and ordered the 201 personal trainer from the link elkid furnished. I chose regular UPS delivery so I doubt I'll get it before Christmas but I really like the virtual partner aspects. Hopefully this GPS system will be better than the timex GPS system. If not, I give up on any more high tech stuff other than heart rate monitors.
I found the manual for the 201 on the Garmin website. I've been reading it to familiarize myself with the unit. I'll print it out at work tomorrow.

GaRebel,
I had the Garmon Trainer out today skating around Atlanta, it held a VERY good lock, even better than most other Garmin GPS's.
i did not get it out onto Peachtree Downtown, but i was still moving about in the park as well. I think i only had a "Weak Signal" once out of the two hours out.
enjoy man, i guess i'll get a chance to see it out and about with mine too? Soony, you ready for one?
the Three of us could do the Childrens Run in Centeinnial Park?

I'm ready... Just need to save up my money. I still haven't decided if I'm going to buy this product or a heart-rate monitor watch.

I live in the Country Club Plaza area in Kansas City.
lots of tall trees and buildings and after three days of running no problems keeping the signal on the Forerunner.
Went playing around with it Sunday on a three mile run and like the fact you can set the watch to record distance as a lap (either a mile, 2 miles or every 5k, etc) and just total distance.
I went to my running store on saturday and they were sold out again and asked me to submitt a running review.
Decided to use this section and print off comments here.
Can't wait for the additional stuff for the watch in Jan.

When is the Children's Run? I couldn't find it listed on my normal sources.
Nevermind - I found it. It's on Feb 21, 2004. I'll be running the Myrtle Beach Marathon that weekend.

presenly it has no software. my guess is they wanted to push it out there for the Christmas season and the software had a glitch. so in january they release the software from their website. it's supposed to be a logbook in a spreadsheet format. plus that is a good way to get the software updates that they come out with for your model(s)
i played with the autostop/autoresume last night on the social skate. great little function. you can tell it at what speed to stop the timer and resume the timer. great for city running and biking and well of cource, SKATING. not sure but i think it would automatically light up too when it restarted. i saw it lit a few times but not sure if i hit a button to do so.
Scorch. welcome on the tag team commentary

Thanks.
I used the stop/start feature in my 3:30 AM run today and this watch keeps getting better and better.
The history function and virtural partner rocks.

Just got home and the package was waiting for me at my door. I'm charging the battery now although I probably won't test out the unit any until tomorrow.
The manual that comes along with it as well as the quick start guide are excellent compared to the poor excuse of a manual I received with my other GPS unit.
So far, good.

I used the Training Assistant yesterday and programmed it to stop when I stopped, but it didn't stop when I stopped at a light. Does this not work with the AutoLap feature simultaneously, or did I do something wrong?

Not sure.
Did you set the auto stop based on pace?
I think the watch calulates your pace and then stop in that mode.
I'll have to fiddle with it some tonight to see.
