I find it ironic that only 10-15 years ago any talk about the conflict in Vietnam was considered taboo or some other nonsense now its seems with our "New World Order" of things, gamers are finding way to make Vietnam winnable.

Look at all the games out on video/PC

Conflict in Vietnam --- --- --- --- Board
PC Battlefield Vietnam
Conflict: Vietnam
Line of Sight: Vietnam
Marine Heavy Gunner: Vietnam
Men of Valor
Platoon: The 1st Airborne Cavalry Division in Vietnam --- --- --- ---
Squad Battles: Vietnam
Vietnam 2: Special Assignment
Vietnam Air War
Vietnam Med Evac
Vietnam: Black Ops
Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh Trail
Vietnam: POW Rescue
Vietnam: The Tet Offensive
War Over Vietnam
Wings Over Vietnam
PS2 Conflict: Vietnam
Men of Valor
Vietnam: The Tet Offensive
XBOX Conflict: Vietnam
Men of Valor

My take on this is developers not wanting to create a game where you can't win the big conflict, creates there little games where you can win a battle and get the feeling you can win the entire conflict.

Not sure what type of postive messgae this is sending young people.

But its still a bit odd to promote something you lost into something you can win.

I think you're overthinking it, though perhaps not.

There is a very popular genre of games dealing with war. There is a slew of WWII games. Keeping with the realism, gamers probably want more and different settings. WWI and WWII have a similar setting, but Vietnam gives you jungle warfare. Plus, there are multiple consoles so you'll get more games.

I agree with Pug. It's just another setting. There's also plenty of games out there where you can play as the loser to try to change history. I bet you can easily find a game where you control German armies in WWI or II. It's even in sports games. In NCAA 05 there's a lot of "collegiate classics" and you play as the loser trying to change the outcome. I know it's not really the same, but once you establish that it's not true history, what difference does it make?

It would be interesting if you could play as the Viet Cong, though.
