unbelievable.
and yet, what has the city learned??? nothing. It has decided that it needs a broader tax base and the blurb in the news reports that the city will increase the occupation tax. What??? city loses businesses and residents to the suburbs because of taxes and convenience, so the remedy is to increase taxes on the businesses that keep the city going???
I sent my check.....does this mean I'm getting nothing in return?

I really think this is just a ploy by the mayor to get someone else to foot the bill for the police on race day. The race is 90% sponsored by outside vendors and he wants them to pick up the rest of the tab.
How in the world can you cancel this 26 year old race?
Tom Murphy is a fine testament to old time Democrat machine politics

from the Great Race Website:
| Pittsburgh Great Race Website wrote: | Dear Runners, Sponsors, Race Enthusiasts,
We regret to inform you that the 2003 Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race is cancelled. Those of you who have already registered will receive refunds. Those of you who were planning on registering, we thank you for your good intentions.
The staff of Citiparks Office of Special Events, who organized this race, are very saddened to see such a great Pittsburgh tradition not held this year. At this point in time the Office of Special Events has been dissolved effective September 1, 2003. What this means to the citizens of the City of Pittsburgh is the following: NO 2004 African-American History Month Activities, NO 2004 Junior Golf Clinics and Invitational, NO 2004 Fourth of July Celebration at the Point State Park, NO 2004 Bach, Beethoven and Brunch Series, NO 2004 Great Ride, NO support for community Foot Races in 2004 (Greenfield Glide, Brookline Breeze, Run around the Square), NO 2004 Riverview 5K, NO 2004 Reservoir of Jazz, NO 2003 Tree Lighting Ceremony and most importantly NO Great Race.
If you would like to see some of this programming come back in the year 2004 please contact your local state Representative and insist that Parks and Recreation be reinstated if a tax reform package is approved. Click Here to find out the contact information for your local State Officials.
We thank you for your many years of support of this event and will miss seeing all of you at the Start and Finish lines.

sadly for Pittsburgh, that is quite a list of events that will no longer exist. I believe that a charity benefitted from the Great Race so I'm sure that will suffer too.

It stinks. I haven't been keeping up with city issues... will have to read more about the deficit. Hate to hear of people losing jobs more than I hate having events cancelled.

What I'm somewhat surprised at is that no one has picked up on an article in the Miami Herald that was published on marathonguide.com concerning the sponsorship of the Pittsburgh Marathon by UPMC. There are strong indications they will no longer be the primary sponsor and the city itself has not determined how much support they can give to the event. I'm not sure if UPMC's sponsorship is going to end this year or next but it doesn't look good. I suspect the economy is going to take a toll on a few more races if things don't improve. Any Pittsburgh area runners know what's going on with this event?

i heard last night that it is cancelled until further notice. the withdrawl of UPMC as the primary sponsor crushed it. and on top of that, the city is so "broke" it can not justify their marathon-related expense either. so, Mr. Mayor has high hopes it will be back by 2005. this bites.
