Why does my Garmin 201 frequently mis-measure the first mile of my run, but my the 2nd mile, it's usually reading mile 2 at the same spot? For my lunch runs, I almost always run the first 2 miles on the same route and mix it up after that.

I use the 201 for almost every run and never noticed anything like that before.
I often run on the same trails and there seems to be no consistancy when or where it loses satellite link or when its off on measuring a distance.

I find that if there are a lot of 'curves', it will act a little funky.

is it actually locked on at first? ais there a mass of powerlines overhead? trees in the suburbia? also it might be just showing the the first mile off as it has yet to see your pace/mph yet.

me too. I ran in a heavily wooded area today. same loop several times sometimes it was anywhere 1.3 - 1.6. two parts of the path were tiny cul-de-sacs and I'm guessing the satellite was picking me up entering and leaving and gave me 0 mileage for those circles. I measured with my car and came up with between 1.5 and 1.6. I wouldn't make a big deal, but with 14 loops .3 difference is alot!!!!
PH--my first mile ALWAYS does that. I've even left my garmin outside while I get my shoes, sock, water and stuff so it has lots of time to "lock" on and it doesn't matter. I guess I should read the manual and find out why this could be happening.

OK.
Here's the deal. I'm going to start marathon training here in two weeks. I didn't do much training outdoors last year and know it was the downfall to my marathon problems. So, I'm making sure I put my LSD's in outside and all weekend running when I do not have my kids. When it cools...as much as I can get in outdoors. Right now it's still 100 degrees at 10pm at night.
Anyway, someone has offered for me to use their Timex 100 lap GPS model on a free basis to start. Do you think this will be good enough for me as a start? I do not have the funds to purchase a Garmin GPS watch right now and get new running shoes.
Will it work ok?
Is it hard to use?

It will work fine and is pretty easy to use. Does it have the instruction manual with it?
I paid $155.00 for my Timex GPS and $117.00 for my Garmin.

The guy I'm getting it from probably has the manual with it. I'll have to email him and ask. He's going to let me try it out first, which is nice.
I guess I don't want to drop a ton of money if it's not going to be used every day with my training.

You should be fine. I think you can download the manual some place if he don't have it. I know I couldn't figure it out without the manual. I sold my Timex for $50 bux then bought the Garmin. The Garmin is smaller, one unit and you don't have to push a button for your mile splits to be recorded. I always for got to do that.

I think if I remember correctly, it makes a beep that you are at a mile marker then you push a button and it remembers the splits. If you don't push the button it just gives you your total miles and time at the end. I think.

Are you sure it cannot shock you when needing to punch in your splits? I mean, I'll be listening to my music.... Grrr.
