What a week! On Wednesday I listened to a seminar given by a man from Honduras who lives in a village on a river and is a coffee farmer. A large multi-national company is building a hydro-electric dam above his village. Not only will the village be damaged but the water will then be privatized. It will also be less clean than it is now. They’ve tried to stand up to the company but the government of Honduras has been bought off by the company so has sent security forces for the company. That means if any of the villagers try to stand up to them, they get death threats, or in some cases, not just threats. Utterly horrible, and the courage of this man was just amazing.
On Friday, I will have a meeting with the under-secretary/legal counsel of the UN and I’m extremely excited for that.
On Sat I’m going to a one-day conference on comparative conflicts in the world. Specifically the areas of interest will be Northern Ireland/ India-Pakistan, and of course the Israel/Palestinian conflict.
I feel very lucky to have these opportunities.

| Isn't the UN like a law firm that they have hundreds of these positions?
That aside, truly impressive.

Sounds pretty impressive. So your goal is to actually try and make a difference?

I replied to this, but I don't see my post, so I'll say it again: you're my new superhero!

Is that your tongue in your cheek? Yes, I'm here to help.
Shannon, I appreciate that very much. I'm not heroic. The people who struggle, like the Honduran guy, are the heroes, and I just want to help them.

Maybe a bit. However, I whole heartedly approve of lawyers working for the good of humanity. Public interest law is one of the toughest (and lowest paying) areas of the law. ( I know because my wife does public interest work). We need many more lawyers willing to do this type of work.
