We're looking to buy a new bedroom set. We went to store A where a guy we know delivers furniture for them. He says haggle with them on the price because they have a 100% markup. Didn't find anything I liked there.
Go to store B, where someone we know is a salesperson. Find a few maybes. We priced a few and this store is a bit more pricy than the other.
Since we know this salesperson pretty well I kinda thought she could get us the best price for this stuff, but she didn't act like there was anything she could do about that. Keith doesn't want to haggle with her and seem like a cheap a$$ in front of someone we know.
What is furniture shopping haggling ettiquite??
Is it Dancer that has the furniture store?

you can haggle. It is a highly competitive business.
You can likely get some free delivery, set up and removal of old furniture if they cant work down the price but, the free stuff is great.

I would haggle on the delivery end and I would probably be a bit disappointed in the woman that didn't offer "something" if you knew she could. Not mad at her (she probably makes her commission off the mark-up), just a little disappointed because I'd take it a little personally when I know I shouldn't...it's bizness.

I had no idea you could haggle for furniture! I wish I had known that a year ago before I started furnishing a house! I have gotten pretty good at finding furniture sales. It seems that stores have them every few weeks and around holidays.

I would be a little irked if I had gone to the store to throw my friend a bone in the first place. So what if she earns less of a commission if she drops the price for me? I wouldn't be in that store anyway if it weren't for this person. So if I can get a deal and my friend can make money in the process, cool, but he shouldn't try to squeak out every red cent from me like I'm any other Joe Customer, because I really was only trying to give him the courtesy of earning some kind of commission by going there in the first place.
Upset? No. But considering that I was probably only there for our mutual benefit, I certainly wouldn't shop there again.

What about asking if you can get a deal for buying the entire bedroom set? I would imagine if you're furnishing an entire room in one shot, there are some concessions that can be made.

It depends on the furniture store. Our store is a one store high end shop. We don't haggle. I do give friends 20%off. And for us we have to hire a delivery company to do our deliveries so we charge for deliveries and that's the only place we usually won't bend. If the furniture store has their own delivery trucks they would probably bend in that area. Check online too. Sometimes a store will have a website and put coupons on the site. Or ask about upcoming sales. If they know a sale is coming they may give you the sale price or tell you when it'll be happening. If they know you're willing to wait for it to go on sale they may offer early sale prices.

This is kinda exactly what I'm thinking.... I don't expect her to give me the stuff for free but.... I'd almost swear I saw dollar signs in her eyeballs when she figured up the total of the set we liked. This is the only thing keeping me from buying the furniture. It's one thing to feel like you've paid too much to someone you don't know. A whole different thing when you know the person.

Can you find out the manufacturer of the furniture and see if anyone else in your area carries it. Alot of places will price match if you find it cheaper elsewhere.
