I think that a couple of RR'ers knew that this was coming.

Larry and I are doing some fund-raising for the Florida Keys Children's Shelter. They do a LOT of good things for children and families, including providing beds/counseling/reuniting/vocational and ecucational training for runaways, crisis counseling for families and children, assisting Children's Service's with placement. At any rate, there are a lot of runaway/at-risk children/teens here and we feel that it's a good cause.

We're trying to raise money by March 1. So far, we think that a mini-croquet tournament and a mini golf tournament might be good idea. We just have to find people with property for a few hours (that's my job).

Any other ideas???

If we win, we're the King and Queen of the fund-raising ball (which would send most of the people we know into fits of maniacal hysterical laughter. Really.) So help us give our friends a giggling fit and contribute any ideas. I might beg for money later in the month but I'll tap the local supply first.)

That is an EXCELLENT idea. And he makes the absolute best NC style BBG pork EVAH (It got me to eat pork for one of the first times in my life and had kept me on it....).

Seriously, that's a great idea. I just hope he wrote the recipe down.

Well there is always the classic of the Yard sale. maybesee about doing A guest bartending at a local pub, car washes, 50/50 raffles, raffles of equipment (ie CamelBak to Powerbars)for "dates" and dinners. you can offer to make a dinner for two that you can deliver, setup, and clean up afterwards. a dinner with $$ per head.

how's that for starters?

EDITED FOR OTHER IDEAS

Eastern NC style (chopped or pulled pork, vinegar sauce) or Western NC style (ketchup sauce, more like a slab of pork, not chopped) ?

I'm more fond of eastern style. A good sauce should clean out the sinuses. Mr. Green

Howzabout a bachelor or bachelorette auction? Those always seem to go over well in Philly, although I have no idea how much work would be involved.....advertising for applicants and such, might be a little much to do by Valentine's Day but it'd be a good tie in.

I like the mini golf idea, that's neat too....and perhaps some sort of fishing event, since that's such a big thing down there? Maybe get one of the captains to work a deal for using his boat for something? Larry would prolly know better than us how to work that, but....just thinking of the crowd down there and what they'd like.

Rich people like to have their names put on stuff...any chance they're building a new shelter or other new building that maybe you could sell bricks? I know they've done that before up here too.....

Still thinking.....

Once a year here, all the local DJ's and whomever else they can get who is a "public figure" like the Gov, etc. do a dinner in which the food is prepared by volunteers and served to the patrons by the "celebrity". Then the celebrity joins you for dinner at your table.

You pay a certain amount of money to in meet some pretty hoity toity folks.

Around here the kidney research foundation kidnaps local figures and holds them in a jail cell in the middle of town until they collect 'bail'. You clear it with the kidnappee first and find out how much bail they think they can get. They raise thousands.

It's eastern style, with vinegar and spice. Very tasty!
Throw some good slaw on top to balance it out and call it dinner!

The guest bartending/chef thing might be good, as well as the bachelor/bachelorette auction, and yard sale.

As far as builings go, building permits and zoning are this whole political rigamajig.

We do however, have a nice contact at a local marina who LOVES free advertising, and he might loan us a captain in exchange for his name in the paper....

The local figure here is the mayor. Unless we can somwhow kidnap Jeb Bush (which I would do just to find out exactly what Jeb is an abbrev for).

We used to do the "Jail and Bail" thing for United Way back in OH, but we had easily twice as many people in a city block as we have on 8 miles of islands here. If nothing else, this will get us meeting more local celebs other than the mayor and his wife/kids. (This is a VERY small town). Population about 2400, stretched over 8 miles of islands and bridges.
