France Unveils World's Tallest Bridge

POSTED: 3:54 pm EST December 14, 2004
UPDATED: 7:20 am EST December 15, 2004

MILLAU, France -- French citizens and officials are celebrating a roadway bridge considered to be the world's tallest.

One of the Millau bridge's pillars reaches more than 1,100 feet into the air, making it more than 50 feet taller than the Eiffel Tower.

The nearly 900-foot-high road aims to give motorists the feeling that they're driving through the sky.

British bridge designer Norman Foster told a French newspaper it was built to have the "delicacy of a butterfly."

The $523 million bridge is meant to open a new link between Paris and the Mediterranean.

It opens to vehicles Thursday.

About 28,000 vehicles a day are expected to cross the bridge in the summer months, and about 10,000 a day the rest of the year, according to France's Eiffage construction company, which built it.

As cool as that is, I could never ever drive on it, or ride in a car over it.

My fear of heights, water, and bridges...I'd certainly die.

Catering to my French BOSS at the moment

No, really.....the car rental place seems to have "misplaced" his car......and delivered it to the place he usually stays, which is not where his secretary put him this trip....
