They are a very common fish in Southeast Asia...In Singapore (that's where I'm from) and many of these parts they are popular food fish (though I've yet to try it) and are also used for medicinal purposes...I've seen them in pet stores around here as well..Not a fish to mess around with...They are very protective of their babies. I heard that large females have been known to attack humans who venture too close to their young often ending with ugly results.
