Posted: 04/18/05 - 12:00 Post subject: Former workplace drama!
As most of you know, my last day at my horrible job was Friday. One project needs finishing, and I was asked if I'd be willing to go up to the site this week in order to finish it. I said sure, but that I'd need something in writing regarding compensation since I don't work for them anymore. Reasonable request, yes?
Well, my miserable s.o.b. of a former boss didn't say anything to be at all, and no one talked to him about the proposed trip this week. Again, THIS week, AFTER my LAST DAY, upon which my benefits were dropped and I'm not accruing any vacation time.
I briefely discussed this trip with my former supervisor on Friday, and I told him that I'd be expecting to be compensated as a consultant if I did this, meaning a reasonable hourly rate and including travel time. No more of this working 12 hours and only billing 8 nonsense. He agreed, but he hadn't talked it over with the other 2 people yet.
So I called in today to figure out what's going on, and the guy I'd be going up there with said that I'd just put it on a normal time card. Meaning I''d get paid $22/hr for and 8 hour day, and the company would get paid $75/hr for my time. I said this was unacceptable, which did not go over well.
It looks like their best offer is going to be a "day rate" of $400, which...for a 12 hour day really isn't a great deal. They could have asked me to stay until May to make sure this got done, but instead they said nothing. I'm at a loss. I really don't know what to do here.

Go for at least $50/hr. The taxes will kill you. You will only clear about 1/2 your hourly rate.

I'm sorry to hear this. While the $400/day is better than their original offer, it sounds to me like you're worth much more.

Why is that? Are the taxes different if you consult?
I know that the social security and medicare percentage doubles, but that is only 7.something percent more.

Just as a point of reference - consultants in the area (in my field) charge upwards of $80/hr.

Their work isn't necessarily steady, hence the high rate. They might only get work 2 days a week.

You probably could do it now. All you need to do is get a business card: PH, Consultant, and go find a client. Not hard. I just don't like the idea of scrounging for work and not getting the benefits of working for an actual organization. It's too much of a pain.
Start charging your friends for fixing their computers.

That's still $66k a year for only working 2 days a week.
You are seriously getting screwed by their offer though. I hope that money isn't a huge issue for you right now and you can decline.

$66k a year without benefits of any kind. Not really a comfortable life.
