I'm having a blonde moment and can't remember if I just thought about posting it while running, or whether I actually came back and DID. Confused

MP3 users, is there a method to your madness? What I mean by that is, do you pick the songs on your playlist with a specific purpose, i.e. all charged up songs, a mix of hard/easy tunes for interval type running, or just music you happen to like at the moment? Or something else altogether?

The reason I am asking....I'm tweaking my latest playlist and can't get it to "feel" quite right. I know it takes some playing with but I'm trying to see how other people do it. Does that make sense??

I used to change the songs by the way I was planning the weeks runs, but now I just leave it. I haven't changed the songs in a long time. I'm definetely due for a change.

I don't run with music, but I'm thinking about getting an MP3 player, and that may be a good way to help control tempo paces... have 20 minutes of easy listening music then 15 minutes of hype music then 20 minutes of easy listening... it'd make the transition much easier I think. Thanks for the idea!

I pick "Pissed off" type songs if I intend to run hard and slow groovy songs if it's a long easy run.

I judge it by the beat, as I tend to modify my pace to the beat of the song.

Does that help? Did I even answer the question??

Hmmm....actually, it does. I never thought of running to slow music Embarassed Most of my stuff is like 80's metal and classic rock and ZZ Top and a few dance tunes, pretty much all fast stuff, but I am noticing that, especially since I am just starting back after a LONNNNG layoff, that I can't keep a hard pace for a long time so I am thinking some shuffling is in order.

Elkid, you are the uncontested Riff Raff MP3 queen, what say you?

OK, I'm gonna see if this works. I have a tendency to always always go out too fast (well, fast for me is a relative term ) and then die early, so I put a slow one in the beginning to help me ease into the run more, then another not quite too peppy tempo'd after that and then the good stuff. Somewhere in the middle when I think I am gonna get tired, I threw another one in but I wasn't sure what to do at the end. I can see the benefits of both a cooling off song and a really whoop ass one for a final pick me up, which do y'all think is better?

Right now I have about two hours' worth of music in there which I am quite sure I won't burn through in one run anytime soon, but it's there for the skipping if I need it.

I'm way into the 80's stuff myself. My current playlist has Guns N Roses, Golden Earring, Meatloaf, Heart, Eric Clapton, Def Leppard...

WOW, that sounds a lot like mine! My "slow" one in the beginning is November Rain. I love that song....and I have some other 80's classics....didn't think of Clapton though, but I bet After Midnight would make a good up tempo one!
Know what else is a must? Molly Hatchett, Flirtin' with Disaster. GREAT beat for about the middle of the mix when you're starting to fade. Smile

If I listen to music on runs, it's for the short ones. I specifically pick songs for running. A slower tune is not what I need if I decide I want music on a run....running with music means I'm feeling tired. I love the whole MP3 concept. i really do. Picking and choosing different tunes and making albums....what a great idea, creating the MP3 player.

If I was going to use music I'd probably pick a lot of Chuck Berry tunes. They all have a good beat that should keep you going. How people can run to Rage Against the Machine or other music of that ilk, is beyond me.

Personally, I always run to a tape called "Running Cadences of the Armed Forces". You can sample some of the tapes/CD's at:

www.militaryrecordings.com

To me, these are great for zoning out during runs. I make believe I'm back with my platoon. I tell women I run with to imagine they're in the middle of a platoon of 20ish hard body Marines. One aquaintace I gave a tape to, credits the tape with keeping her enthused.

Best of all, the tapes help me to maintain a nice pace - something I have been complimented on at several races.

I really paid attention to the songs I had on my MP3 yesterday and I found that the ones that I really clicked with either had a consistent beat.

*Born to Be Wild
*Play Funky Music White Boy
*La Bamba
*Mambo King (big bad Voodoo Daddies)

Or had a message that was motivating such as Van Halen's RIGHT NOW.

That's really cool! I have Born to be Wild on mine too. I actually tried out the new mix yesterday with good results, although I still went out WAY too fast (for me) despite my slow tune in the beginning, but what was weird, was it was deceptive. I didn't feel like I was running hard at all to November Rain, but I ended up running one of the fastest miles I have ever run....very weird.

I have a good mix going now, everything from "Who Let the Dogs Out" to the Vengaboys "We Like to Party" to "Sweet Child Of Mine" and "My Generation." Odd mix, but so far so good. I definitely need the music to keep me going and I totally agree with elkid about not wanting to hear my gaspy, ragged breathing. If the music is loud enough, I even forget about the pain in my legs....hehe

La Bamba, that's a thought....and BBVD....I do have Brian Setzer, which is kinda the same music.....hmmmm.....
