Where are you moving? We packded all of the boxes and had movers load up a big semi and drive cross-crounty with our stuff. They did a great job and even padded the furniture to prevent damage. It wasn't cheap. I think the entire thing cost us about $4,600. And it took them a while to get the stuff here because they had other drop off locations.
As for advice, get rid of all of the crap you've been hanging to. Chances are you'll never unpack the box of junk and it'll sit around for years. This coming form someone who moved long distance twice.
Gosh, Kristin, sounds like big things are happening fo ryou. Good luck!!!

I will stress again.....take pictures of everything....especially electronics. We got alot of stuff broken--every tv in fact and then when we tried to claim it. They told us that they weren't working before they moved them. ?????duh, why would we have you move them......I found pictures of my son standing infront of one of the televisions....they couldn't say it was an old picture because with children they age fast and he was the same.
Certain items don't make the move: for some reason ladders and vacuums disappear....?????I don't know why.
Also make sure that your truck is a direct route......many times they pack a few other houses and try to get them on one huge truck at some other location.
I have more horror stories but I think they have to do more with military moves and not civilian.

very bizarre - we lost a ladder too.
we've done two long distance moves, they did all the packing and loading and unloading and it was quite a bill -- since we were transferred, the co paid.
no real horror stories tho. i'd definitely use a big name though.
i still hate the site of a moving van...

Thanks again, everyone. You are all making me even more wary than I was about moving companies.
We're getting rid of a TON of stuff. Our art school student neighbors are getting the first dibs on everything, as they've taken care of Sierra (dog) when we've both been gone and have been wonderful friends as well.
I think I will rent a video camera tomorrow. Either that or we'll end up moving ourselves, with help from friends.
I really, really appreciate all of the tips. There's a lot of valuable advice here!
