Posted: 05/06/03 - 12:00 Post subject: Flying Pig Marathon 4-person relay and pee fest
I spent last wednesday thru saturday in Ohio traveling around to different cities visiting family and friends. Then on sunday i partook in the Flying Pig relay. We were a slow team of 4, but doing it just to have fun.
Got up at 4:30 to meet everyone at 5:30. Drug my poor husband along (though he better get used to it because i plan to do more ) We barely got there in time for our second leg person to get to her shuttle bus to the first exchange zone. Basically we all walked to the area together, then scattered to hurredly pee or get to the start or catch a shuttle. I was doing the last leg of the race so i had PLENTY of time to wait. Caught the shuttle and was dropped off at our exchange zone. Estimated time for our third person to come in was 10:15. So at 7:45 I parked my butt on a curb and looked longinly at a guy who had brought a sleeping bag. He was happily zipped up inside in the warmth. It was probably 50 degrees. A wee bit chilly.
This is getting long... I decided I'd get in line to pee at 9, but at 8:45 i thought I better not wait any more cuz i had to go. 45 minutes later I was doing the pee-pee dance and was crossing my legs. I really thought i was going to just go right there in the line, but the dance worked! Didn't help the discomfort, but it worked. Then I sat some more, cheered people on. It was very fun to watch. I had never seen a marathon before. About 10:00, i decided i had to pee AGAIN. There weren't many people in line- no worries. Got IN the port-a-john and heard my number called. :!: Then I heard "8006 will Stephanie Smith please meet her relay party in the chute!" :!: :!: Turns out I had missed the number the first time. I didn't get to go. Had to make a pit stop later on in the race. And those port-a-johns happened to be by a crowd cheering "go! looking great! go go!" Kind of made me chuckle.
Overall, a great time. I felt bad running all fresh from mile 18.7 to 26.2. I saw some horrible things along the way. But I can't wait to do a marathon!!
sorry so choppy and long. I'm still recovering from lack o' sleep and a bad plane ride.

Good for you, Steph!!! Cincy is a tough course and if you had the bridges at the end, that's one of the two yuckiest legs! That last bridge from Kentucky is a beast!! I was there last year with some of the old Kick group--Cincy as a town really gets into the marathon.

No kiddin'! It is a pretty good running city, so i think that's why there's a lot of support. There were so many people yelling and shouting. Some people had music playing, some were playing music, some were making a point to call out EACH person's number or name and encourage them. It was pretty cool.

Yeah, and the crowds are really thick at the end and LOUD. I don't know if I'd ever run the whole thing though, a looooootttaa hills in that race, especially the first 5-6 miles.

Yeah, i don't want a hilly marathon for my first- so i'm sticking here in florida. Our poor first leg person, she said she was dying on her last mile. I think the entire mile was a gradual climb up to Hyde Park.
And as for the crowds at the end- it was so weird because you are running on like 5 lanes of road and then all of the sudden it gets narrow and fenced in to a tunnel. It made me a little uneasy, but it also made me run faster!
