Airports aren't considered as being in the country... if you don't leave the airport you don't have your passport stamped (right? that's what I've heard...). I think you could possibly make arrangements to say that you are actually going to London for a very short stay, but it probably would not be worth the hassles of going through customs and checkpoints.

so it can cave in?

eeeekkkkk!
The one thing that maybe got me to think that way was seeing that bridge shot during the 89(?) Bay Area earthquake, with the video of that car on the bridge, and all of a sudden - GONE.

Though I have been on some high bridges since then, that picture still creeps me out.

If I flew from Chicago to Heathrow and had a layover in London for 12 hours before heading to Johannesburg, could I leave the airport?

Highly unlikely.

I'd rather take the chunnel than take a bridge several hundred feet above the water.

Would it be physically possible to go from Heathrow to the coast, take the chunnel to France, turn around and get back to Heathrow all in 12 hours?

I think so. BARELY. and it would cost probably ~$600. And all you'd see of Paris is Gare Du Nord long enough to get on the returning train.

On the way to Norway once I had eight hours in Amsterdam, so we left the airport and headed into town. But that was pre-9/11 so I don't know what it's like now.

But if you could get out, I'd say a half day in London would be much more fun than sitting in a train. And Gare Du Nord really isn't THAT pretty.

That said, and at the risk of getting hit by a brick by my favorite Franco-Phobe, plan a separate trip to Paris. You'll never regret it, and it's not as expensive as you might think.

Hmm... a trip to Europe...

No, I just really wanted to go so I packed a backpack and took the cheapest Europe trip possible, and it happened to involve flying to London and taking the Chunnel to Paris.

I miss being single.

It looks like they're going with the direct Atlanta to Johannesburg option for an extra $500. Thank you for all your help Riff Raffers!
