beautiful day for a run in the country. picture perfect 40 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. heaven sent running weather.
drive to Shanksville - 45 minutes east of my house. The drive was a direct forshadow to the run itself. over one mountain and then another and then another, altitude signs, ears popping, brakes burning up -- i'm thinking, gee, i hope the 9.3 miles isn't hilly.......
very hill course. no times taken, but a clock at the finish just FYI. gave out a very nice, very plain 93 memorial 15K run long sleeved shirt -- no sponsors at all.
first 3 miles were really strong for me - 9:30s was a great pace for this run. then, the real hills started and i lost it. the longest and most inclined hill (.7 miles cuz i drove it on the way home) was the unpaved hill to the crash site.
The "Crash Site"--out in the middle of nowhere i tell you. nothing to see, literally, for miles but grass and distant mountains....I crest this hill, go down and there is the temporary memorial to those that lost their innocent lives on 9-11. i was breathless in more ways than one. in the middle of nowhere, halfway thru my run, i feel this tremendous loss of life--very emotional for me. I stop, drink, Gu, say a prayer and then i just go on. same as life i guess. it just goes on in the face of stuff like that. it was so for me, but i knew on that long hill up what was on the other side. i tried to prepare myself.
i wound my way back and finished in 1:34 and 59 seconds. My goal was 1:35.
i can not believe what it must have been like for the residents of Shanksville that 9-11 morning -- as clear and blue as today was. The race director told me his school, which is 5 miles away from the site, shook from top to bottom upon impact. That teddy-bear type wall and American flag in that field was just such an awesome site. i felt so small and not worthy but very glad i was able to be there.

You're a better woman than me - I'm still too raw from that day to do runs for it. Great report, and great time, you fastio.

What a great sounding run! Thanks for the report. Doesn't sound like you lost it at all...you found a great way to be part of a tribute.
