is it important to you/your training?

are you flexible?

do you care?

how do you relate flexibility to being "in shape" (as per PH's thread)?

and lets try to keep this clean...

i'm not crazy flexible. i think it would help me and my training, my posture is crap and i think i'm due for some yoga or something.

i'd like to be more flexible as i think it would help prevent injury and make me feel better as a whole...

i think flexibility is a big part of fitness... who cares if you can move 300 pounds if you can't tie your damn shoes.

Flexibility is important part of training but you should when or when not to do it.
there is alot of controversy regarding the benefits of stretching as it entails to running. My PT always tells me to stretch after weights as well as after running workouts. This is to reduce post-workout muscle soreness and to prevent injuries by increasing flexibility.

Stretching before a workout or a race actually has negative consequences...first your muscles are probably not warmed up enough and that might increase the risk of getting muscle pulls.. second, stretching before a race or a quality session may actually cause you to run slower, negatively impacting your performance.

i'm probably a B on flexibility. i mean, i can still sit cross-legged on the floor and touch my nose to the floor in front of me, i believe that's fairly flexible. i think it's also "fairly" important in a training program to maintain flexibility.

in the last 6 months of "injured status" i have learned the importance of muscle release as opposed to stretching which, in my opinion, is counter productive to most fitness programs and can actually sabatoge some of it. i can not stress the value of massage enough in a running program, at least with me it is the cornerstone of staying well and it helps with flexibility.

I'm flexible, but not overly so. I also agree with what Tim says about stretchig after instead of before. I need to work on it, though.

Sadly, I expect you're more flexible than I am.

I've never been able to touch my toes.

I've always been quite flexible. sometimes when i stretch it feels like it's not working. I practically have to turn myself into a freaking pretzel to make it feel like the muscles are being stretched out Confused

I think it's very important - after all, it is one of the things they assess in "fitness tests".

I've just bought a Yoga series that I will start, as soon as I recover from my thon (the thought of yoga right now is just as painful as stairs! Wink)

in my case I disagree, I need to stretch before and after. If I don't before I am stiff as a board. Not just in running either, also when I play hockey and such.

By the way Jen what is strechig??

light exercise before a workout is supposed to be the best way to warm up...

but i know having more flexibility will help with posture and stride and other assorted areas.
