Posts on Iran and Iraq both pertain to the Middle East thus the thread you concerning political views concerning both countries, Bush's interactions and whether he is leading us down same road as a well known 1930's German is fair game.

I realize this board is somewhat redneck conservative and I therefore don't mind being criticized for my unorthodox viewpoints.

But in the post you locked none of us had gotten out of hand with the remarks. I didn't see any name calling - some passionate discussions as I would expect anytime the name Bush is brought up between opposing political viewpoints, especially with the Iraq War in full swing. The vast majority of my friends are staunchly on the side of those who criticize me in this thread so it's nothing new and not anything I haven't learned to deal with. Although I do scan all visitors to my house with a medal detector for weapons before they enter. Mr. Green

I don't see where the thread went off topic since any post concerning the Middle East can potentially contain the same discussions. Why have one post on Iraq, one on Iran, another on the ME in general and then another on whether Bush is Hitler incarnate or not when you can keep everything in one thread as they all relate to each other?

you just called me a redneck conservative. Confused

As a former moderator of this former, I know Gowan saw the way it was going. It was a fair decision.

The name calling was the offensive references to SS and our military, some members of this forum have friends and family in the military. That is name calling

Though I don't agree with the point, the references to SS and our military were fair game. It wasn't malicious name calling, it was a historical metaphor. Can no one be compared to former evils?

I think it was a fair decision to lock it because it was going off topic. They're all related, but another 5 degrees and we'd be talking about Kevin Bacon. And no one wants that.

The way I see it is that Sheldon referred to my son and Aire's husband as members of the new SS. I'd still bust his chops.

I'd pay for the opputunity you one sided moron. I was in the military for years. I know all about it. I have the right to compare whatever I want to whatever I want. Don't like it, tough poop.

I will not be back on this board, so don't bother to answer I won't read it.

I, for one, won't miss your illiterate misguided commentary.

Sheldon's comments were out of line. His comment to robp earlier this evening in this thread confirmed that the purpose of his post in the other thread was inflammatory, and that he had no intention of engaging in productive discourse.

I don't disagree with you. But the thread was taking too much of a personal tone in my opinion, and I chose to shut it down.

In the future, if you aren't happy with the way I'm moderating this forum, I'd appreciate the courtesy of a PM in lieu of an actual thread. Otherwise, feel free to file a complaint with the management if you aren't pleased with my decisions as a moderator.

If you are going to make wild accusations without factual reference, then don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.

I suppose all the funeral missions I have been on this year are for SS Storm Troopers.... In my opinon these brave soldiers were far more honorable than you will ever be.

And just for reference, I will be standing right behind Rob for my turn.

No one, but no one, has any right to compare our military to the SS. I don't like having my 28 years' of service denigrated like that. Can I get a ticket for my turn at bat ?

I wouldn't compare our military to the SS, but threatening to beat someone because you don't like their opinion doesn't sound very American to me.

But it is human.

When something very dear to someone is insulted many will defend its honor to the death. Whether it be their country, their family, their heritage, their way of life. It has gone on for centuries and generations. Many a duel was fought for precisely that reason, insult to something dear.

I know it is human, and for the record, I don't really think most people here would beat Sheldon for his beliefs. But I also firmly believe that one of the greatest things about country is that all people can be heard, regardless of whether or not you like their opinion. To say, even if just on a reflexive "protect your honor' level, that someone should be beaten for expressing their view goes against what the very essence of what I believe it means to be American.

I do respect the service all of men and women in the military, but that doesn't mean they (as indivuals or as a whole ) should be beyond criticism.

there is a difference between being insulted and having your loved ones insulted. Diss me and I'm upset, but diss my boys, and my claws come out. That's human nature.

Criticism is very different from insults.

Compare the military to anything you want but use facts to support your assertions. Don't just throw something out that people take as an insult and walk away. Explain your position without name calling and insults.

Criticize all you want. Stand in line. Are there things I don't like about this war? This administration? the military? Sure! But, I will discuss it with facts, not insults.

On that part I agree with you.
