Posted: 11/10/03 - 11:18 Post subject: First Masters Workout
New Masters swim program at the gym. My first swim team practice evah! Up at o’dark thirty and at the pool at 5:20. Only 2 people in the water and I introduced myself to the Coach. Brief background and I jumped in to do 200 warm so he could evaluate me. He said I looked very good for a non-swimmer and that was a compliment. Next was a six beat kick per side drill. He said that my kick was much better then I gave myself credit for.
Of course he did have corrections as well. My entry was a little to soon and my hand was swimming under water (my term) during the extension. We’ll need to fix that immediately. Next my body roll was a little much. Maybe because I saw him watching me; but, it is much better then not having any roll. He wants the roll at 45 degrees. The last thing we worked on today was stroke depth. Two years ago a coach told me to keep my arm straight, it was the latest thing with the Australians. Last year during video analysis, they told me to bend my arm and bring my hand to center line but not cross it. Now I’m told it is somewhere in a middle. We talked about keeping the fingers pointed down, anchoring, and catching the dead water a little further away from the body. I immediately felt the difference.
He doesn’t want me to over think everything. Being an engineer that will be hard to do. Especially since I am self taught from books. Then (coach) John tells me the guy next to me was talking smack about being on the swim team in HS and college and you are much better then him. Thanks. A coach is going to tell in about 10 seconds where your at so why bluff. John will handle him. He went down the line and did an eval on the rest of the group of about 7 or 8. We had several no shows from a few swim teachers/coaches that were supposed to be there so we should start out with 10-12.
John did not start swimming until he started West Chester in ’62 and has been coaching since ’65 so he has a few years under his belt. Other training practices included hardly any if at all kickboard or pull buoy. He will do kick sets with fins. He does not go for things that artificially change your alignment. He recommends I get a pair of 3/4 fins instead of the zoomers. Better feel and ankle flexibility. I didn’t get a good clarification on the difference or benefits. Since this is the first class for everyone, it was basically a meet and greet. I told him I do between 2500-3000 so that is what he will write up for next week. He was encouraging to everyone and told them to pick pieces of the workout and do the distance that they are comfortable with. Then he said there was to much talking and get ready to cry next week.

That's a lot of technique and stuff. Here I was just gonna jump in the pool and go.
Sounds like you found a great coach - nice!

Wow Bob! How interesting!
It sounds like your coach gave you some great compliments about what you were doing already. That's great. Was it intimidating to be evaluated by him?
I'll be interesting to hear how you do with the Master's Swim Team and what you do on it. Please keep us posted on how you do.

He asked me what I wanted to get out of this. I told him I was a triathlete and have never been at a swim practice before. And I did 1.2 mile swim in 35 minutes. He asked me what I needed him for? So that eased some tension before I got in the water. The warm up was going well then I saw him walking next to me *gulp* just finish the lap. Its like you got every problem correct until the one where you had to go to the blackboard. I'm there to learn and train so the constructive criticism is fine and welcomed.
Yes, next week the plesentries will be over and it will be

I loved Master's swim (when I was going). It was so much technique and so much technique and even more technique. But it's worth it! Just wait until the day he shows up in his speedo ready to swim with you. Save your chlorine tears for that day!

No kidding. I will definitely need coaching once I hit the water. I'm not exactly a natural swimmer. Okay, okay... I'm not exactly a swimmer.

Very cool. Sounds like you'll be getting just what you want.
Tell me more about this program. Is it just training or will you swim in meets?

The program is brand new for the gym so I guess we will see what the interest is in masters meets. I have heard of a few in the area that are open to all even if you are not a registered USMS swimmer.
Next Monday it will be down to business

I've been reading up on swimming techniques a little bit these past months...and I'm still not getting all that Tribob said there either. I'm one of those who needs to actually have this told to me face to face. It would probably be best that I get the Total Immersion Tapes to hear about it all.
You're not alone RR.
