I am running my first marathon in Columbus on Oct 15... I ran a half two weekends ago, it was hard for me to keep my pace where I wanted to. I ran 1:50:40 missed my goal by 40secs (not the problem) The problem was I was unable to slow my start pace I ran a 7:03 for the first 4 miles or so and quikly slowed.... I am trying to keep my pace on marathon day @ 8:50 any thoughts to not start to fast.... Also, how many 20+ milers should I have under my belt before the race?
thanks!

well, I'm no expert...
I'd try to do two, maybe three 20 milers before a marathon. Also, you don't need to go much farther than that, a 20 or 22 should do.
As far as the pacing goes: other than practicing holding a given pace, just try to find people running 9s or 10s beforehand and stick with them until your ready to pick it up? If the race has pace groups this could be easy to do.
