Posted: 02/08/04 - 18:58 Post subject: First Half Race Report (Will be updated with results later)
The day has finally come and everything went by so quickly...
I got to the race site at about 7:30 am, which left about 1 hour till the race started. It was a foggy, cold (38 degrees) morning at the start. There were about 2000 people attending this competitive event including many of Canada's best runners and a couple of Kenyans. Overall, I felt good about the race. My race strategy did fall into plan (by negative splits) although my calves tightened up at the last mile or so and I was forced to slow down. Lost about a minute or so when that happened..
Here's the breakdown (sorry no mile splits)
Miles 1-5: Went at a steady easy intensity (about 7:45-7:50 pace) for the 1st 5 miles. Spent most of the time here enjoying the scenery and the ocean views. Here are the times for miles 2 and 5:
2: 15:46
5: ~39 min
Mile 5-6: Started to pick up the pace and overtaking people. Time for 6th mile mark: 46:50
Miles 7-11: Continued acceleration to race pace, overtook lots of people during this time. Felt strong.
8th mile mark: 1:01:00
Mile 12-finish: Started to feel the tightness in the calves shortly after the 12th mile marker, got worse near mile 13..had to slow the pace down till the finish..
Total Time according to HRM watch: 1:36:54 (I started timing from the start line)
Clock Time: 1:37:09 (started timing before I crossed the start line)
Position: 258 overall out of about 1900 runners (Ill post the detailed results and pics once they are up online) Best time was around 1:09
Not a bad time considering it's only my 1st half marathon (plus it fell right in the middle of my goal time range) and having missed over 2 weeks of training due to a foot injury. Next time goal would probably be around 1:30 by the end of this year...

Mad props Tim!
Impressive use of negative splits, even though you had to slow it down at the end. If you've got the discipline to use them like you did in this race, you're gonna kick some ass. Nice time, you should have no problems getting under a 1:30 by year end.
