I got asked to serve on the church finance committee.

Any horror stories anyone would like to share?

I've never served on any finance committee and I've never served on any committee for this church.

I havne't balanced my checkbook in 5 years and have yet to have an overdraft. I think I'm highly qualified to offer you advice.

Living and breathing beancounting and being involved in all kinds of organizations and charities, the one thing I've found about churches is no where else are you going to find tighter purse strings. And I suppose, rightly so. But still, it's frustrating as all get out to spend precious meeting time discussing the cost of light bulbs dunno

Your eyes will be opened a lot to the inner workings of the church.

I was just asked to be a deacon.

yeah - it's called intellectual masturbation - when a group of adults who volunteer to get together as a committee to discuss something but end up over thinking, under simplifying something to nth degree to the point where nothing gets done.

I'm on my church's finance committee - we're a small group, thank God!!! No real complaints other than I'd like to get a peek at the financials a day or two before the meeting.

I think there's only 3-4 other people on the committee.

There are five of us and the Pastor on our committee (council), I have been on it for over a year. I recently put together a presentation for the entire Parish. Its been interesting learning the interworkings of the church and the archdiocese.

There's three of on plus some old guy that was probably a parishioner and member of the finance committee since the parish's inception.

Everything's great till the cash runs out - then you need to make some tough decisions. I recommeded we start selling indulgences again like in the old days but that didn't go over well Wink

Greg may be able to tell you some horror stories.

when you hear, all those in favor, raise your hand, just raise your hand or risk bodily harm, church or no church; it's just easier that way.

I recommend you get a palm pilot and get the documents to go program, so you can spreadsheet during the meeting…nothing like 'sheeting on the fly
