Tough race for a great cause.

Today I ran the 4th annual Fighting Irish 5k in Chestnut Hill, PA. All proceeds from this race benefit St. Malachy School, a private grade school located in the inner city of Philadelphia attended by 100% minority children who wouldn't normally have the opportunity for a Catholic education. My good friend Bill and his family are close with the Priest that runs St. Malachys so I came along to run the race and show my support.

The weather was about 34 degrees and WINDY! The wind was what really got me. Brrrrrrrrrr. Oh yeah, and the hills. Did I mention the hills? There were lots and lots of them! The race course wrapped around the Chestnut Hill Academy and the amazing surrounding neighborhood. If I wasn't so miserable, I would've really enjoyed checking out the beautiful homes.

The race overall was tough. First mile was about 9:20 which is really good for me considering the hills. Second mile was 19:30 or so. Still hanging in there. Then...about 1/4 mile to the finish there was yet another hill and once at the top, a slow incline to the finish...straight into the cold wind! Not good....I was sucking air big time. I ended up finishing somewhere after 30:00 but before 31:00...not completely sure.

The best part of the day was getting a chance to see GoGirlGo. Always a pleasure!

Really glad you were there, Cat.

Like an idiot (wait it's Irish: like an eejit) I stood in the freezing wind for about 40 minutes with nowhere to go. My poorly thought out clothing left me seriously hurting. A short sleeve tshirt, a longsleeve shirt, and a sleeveless vest. What a muttonhead. I put the race shirt on when I got it pre-race, but for reasons that now escape me didn't want to repin my bib onto something new. So I decided that I could only wear it next to my short sleeve shirt, which was the innermost. Thus I stripped down to nothing but the tshirt in that heinous wind and cold.

Me smart.

My time was about 35 and change, but I ran it with a friend who's new to all this. I'm proud to say she and I have run this course several times and she didn't stop or walk once. The hills were a serious drag for both of us--last year I had to walk them--but this year I prepared.
