PostPosted: 11/04/02 - 13:27    Post subject: Female President vs. Minority President-which one will be..
......First

which will come first for president of the US, a woman or a minority (read: non-white, non-christian) or, a non-white woman?

there are some interesting things to consider, other major western powers have already seen a female head of state, why not the US? or how about this, the last name of all the US presidents have been generic (read: no discernable ethnicity)? it wasn't until kennedy that a catholic president was elected. and while women make up 50% of the population, very soon the minority population taken together will be larger than the caucasian pop. and hey, while we're at it, if you vote minority-- WHICH ONE?

specific examples to note: when geraldine ferraro ran as mondale's vp, she was knocked for being italian because heaven forbid the mob should control the govt. hilary clinton won a new york senate seat that few thought was feasible, and some predict will go for pres someday (though a recent poll showed a whopping 66% of the pop would never vote for her). many thought that colin powell could have won the last election. and how about a jewish pres? lieberman's run as vp for gore in the last election raised eyebrows because we had never had a jewish head of state before.

other random stuff: we had an african-american supreme court justice before a female one. there are something like 9 female senators, 2 asian senators, and 1 native american senator (please correct my figures if i'm wrong)

Also, four of the last five presidents were governors - this election day alone could see something like 10 woman voted in as governors.

so what's what?? what are your thoughts??

I believe the first minority or female president will be a republican. I am willing to wager on it, in fact.

It'll be a minority male before it's a female.

I say this because of the examples you pointed out (and others): Colin Powell, Joseph Lieberman, etc.

I always thought either Libby Dole or Jeanne Kirkpatrick, but this is interesting.

I guess I don't understand why there hasn't been one yet. Either or or both.

I think it will be a minority male as well - probably African American. People's visceral reaction to Hillary tells me this country still doesn't accept strong, vocal women very well.

I will agree that it will be a republican, be it minority or female (or both). The democrats will likely have one or the other on their ticket before the republicans but until those in power of right persuade their followers "it's acceptable". the opposition for the dems will be too strong. (Not to mention all the hate groups that will oppose no matter the party.)

I would guess though that a female will be first.

Sort of an ironic twist on the concept of a "gender gap," no? We hear about how no one can win the White House without wooing the "soccer moms." Yet even a female candidate is not guaranteed of winning over her own gender.

1-only a person with true integrity would do that (republican party)
the party does not recruit people, it accepts people...for their principles

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by that. I know political debates are discouraged here, but are you saying that Republicans are the only ones with true integrity, or did I mis-understand you? I probably misunderstood you, right?

what i mean cb is that generally the democrats are pro union and pro liberal causes...stuff that the repubs shy away from...and most die hards (me included would not vote for anyone with a more liberal stance)

but i think more democrats would cross the "line" and vote for a minority only because they feel more represented.

for example...i love Colin Powel and Condezella Rice only because they do not espouse their race first..they are accomplished and got their positions because of ability a true republican ethic..

i am just trying to explain voting ideas, not really questioning integrity...there are many sincere democrats with integrity.

There are so many things I would like to say about that joe, but in keeping with light-hearted spirit of this place, I won't. Smile

I will say, that using that "logic" would lead to the assumption that a Democrate would be the first minority elected. If the Dems are concerned about qualifications, just getting a minority elected they would have more free votes that a Republican candidate would.
