I learned this morning that a boy I went to school with (K-12) was killed in a car accident on Friday. While I was not close to him and I think I've seen him once since high school, it bums me out a bit.
I remember in the 3rd grade he was called out of class early and our teacher told us his father had been murdered. Even as young kids the rest of us noticed a big difference in him afterwards. He got kinda mean and hateful.
In high school he started drinking at a young age. I guess he never grew out of that phase, he was drunk when he wrecked his car on Friday.
His mom worked with my sister for years and they became friends. His mom is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I can't help but feel most sorry for her. (does that make sense?) I know she did her best to raise him after her husband was murdered, but look what happened. She would often talk to my sister and I about the things he had done, and how she had tried to help him.
I don't plan to go to the funeral, but I will send Sharon a card and some flowers. I don't know what else to do.
Thanks for listening.

Wow. Just when I think I have problems, you hear something like that. What a tragic life.

I found out a guy I knew since 5th grade died suddenly this week. He was a diabetic since he was a young adult, so odds are this caught up with him.

I like your understanding nature on this situation, Akey...A card would be a very nice gesture.

Allison, I think that's a very nice gesture. Death is a tough thing to handle in any situation, but I agree, I'd probably feel the worst for her also. She's suffered a lot of losses in her life and probably feels guilty for her son not turning out better, which doesn't sound like is her fault.
This is a rough time of year for a lot of people, either with anniversaries of deaths or just the realization that some are going to be missing this year. I've been going through a lot of that lately and am way more emotional than usual about it. Everyone please go home tonight and be extra nice to your families.....and be grateful you have them.

I'm sure the card will be appreciated. Your loving concern for her will be noticed.
Take care of yourself and allow yourself to grieve if you feel the need. It's amazing how the death of someone on the fringes of our lives can have such a strong impact on us. I know it causes me to reflect on my mortality.

I am sorry, Akern. I think rolling rock is right; some people never get over a traumatic event like that. Poor guy.
