Posted: 11/04/04 - 18:58 Post subject: Fall marathons 2005
Due to an actual existing social schedule for myself in late Feb and half of March, I can't train sensibly for a spring marathon in 2005. So I am looking at potential races for fall 2005.
On my list so far is:
October:
Chicago
Akron Towpath (Ohio)
Indy
Columbus
Detroit
MCM
November:
NYCM
Philly
Any comments/plugs for certain marathons? I know NYCM would be via lottery.
My husband is actually interested in Philly, since his sister just moved to Manyuak (you know, I don't know the spelling of it.) We would have somewhere free to stay also. And the training would be in the cooler months.
I think MCM, around the monuments would be neat. If the weather would be cooler. (I'm pretty sure Philly would be nice and cool in November.)

I ran Philly so have a few other
Good course, well supported.
Plus you could meet a bulk of the Philly area riff raffers
Manayunk, site of last year's Philly Marathon, riff raff gathering

Chicago - Ran it 2.5 times. Great course. Great support. Flat.
Indy - Ran it 1.5 times. They have changed the course so I don't know anything about it. Ok crowd support the times I ran it.
Columbus - Ran it this year. Fun times. Mostly flat.
All three have a special place in my heart.

I guess you are not considering the West Coast?
October: Portland Marathon (Oregon)
Royal Victoria Marathon (Victoria, BC)
Okanagan International Marathon (BC Interior)
Toronto International Marathon (Ontario)
November: Seattle Marathon (Washington)- though I heard it's a tough one...
December: California International
San Franscisco

Detroit: I ran it last year, (will run it again next) water/gatorade every mile. GU at 15 and I believe 18. Great course finish in Ford Field, go over the ambassador bridge into Canada and back through the Detroit/Windsor tunnel into Detroit, pretty good crowd support (not like Chicago or New York) but they are out there!!!! I truly believe its on the rebound and will be one of the better fall marathons without the really huge crowds. (10,000) this year between thoners, relay and half marathoners.

I ran Chicago in '94 and Columbus in '98. I found them very similiar because they were both flat, fast courses, with good support and the weather was also similiar with cool(low 50's), party cloudy conditions.
But the downside to Chicago... too many people
This year results:
Chicago-over 30,000 finishers
Columbus-only 4400 finishers

Go here to get a full list. Richmond's in the fall, too.
Philly is where to go. A huge number of people BQ here, it's small (8500 or so runners) and the weather is great. Flat and fast.

You can come to Jacksonville in Mid December, it is usually nice here then! It usually almost feels like a fall day.
