You know, I love fall festivals. But, these days they don't seem to be as fun as they used to be. I remember bobbin' for apples - w00t!!! I remember pumpkin seed spittin' contests. I remember candied and carmel apples. I remember cake walks - yum!!!
What are some things you do (or did) at your local fall festivals?

We just had ours 2 weeks ago. We have had a 5K run as part of ours for many years. We always have a parade, rides, bingo, lots of junk food of course, water fights, raffles, etc. This year we had special stuff cuz our town turned 150 yrs old! We had fireworks and we have an old Opera house here that someone just shut the door too many, many, many, years ago and they opened that for tours.

We had yambilee in my hometown. We'd always enter in the yaminal competition, where you add props to a yam to make them look like an animal. Needless to say, seals were the ever-popular choice.

They put numbers on the floor in the shape of a circle and people walk around in the circle until the music stops (kinda like "musical chairs") then, if you are on the correct number (predetermined) then you win the cake for that "round." Typically local moms would make the cakes/pasteries and donate them for the cake walk (I come from a very small town!!).

Did your small town have a gym? We would never do that here. Or was this in the olden days??

Absolutely. I've done cake walks before. At little festivals before the little town I grew up in became a booming suburb of Dallas.

Wouldn't the expression have to come from somewhere?

The fall festival was typically at the elementary school. The numbers were taped pieces of paper on the floor.
