Some info on the race itself http://www.lep.ca/. Click on the "Fall Classic" link to go to the race info webpage.
This was my 2nd time doing this race (the 10k) and it was held at my school (UBC) which really helped in locating the place and familiarity with the route. There was choice between a 5k, 10k and a half marathon. Weather today was fairly cold (2-3 degrees celsius at the start) with light rain. I was half-expecting it to snow due to the weather forecast yesterday but fortunately it didnt. Got to the race site about 35 min early which gave me just enough time to get my timing chip, change into race clothes, drop my bag off at the bag check, get to the bathroom, chat with a friend who's doing the 10k as well, and do a short warmup jog.
I made the mistake again of positioning myself too far back in the crowd (did that last year), which gave me a hard time trying to weave past the slower folks. The good thing about this was that this forced me to pace myself and I didnt start speeding up to race pace until I passed the 4k mark. Sorry, no splits this time because I didnt set my HRM stopwatch properly. Overall I started out at a fairly comfortable pace and built up to race pace in the middle and was passing a whole lot of people in the process. The 5-8k mark felt pretty good and strong. The tough part was near the end when my legs started to get sore from lactic acid buildup though I started to accelerate towards the finish. Also my HRM got loosened and dropped out so I had to carry it all the way to the finish line. (probably lost some time there) Overall I did ok-didnt set a new 10k overall pr though I had a new pr for this race course (by 14 s). Here are the results:
Chip time: 44:21
Overall for 10k: 113/1008
Men's division: 96/400
under 20 male age group: 4/28 (so close to getting hardware!!)
Now I'm going to take a couple of days off running then resume training for the half in Feb of next year...

good race. the end of the race is always really difficult. it's where that mental toughness really needs to kick in. great job!
