Posted: 11/21/04 - 15:36 Post subject: Fall Classic Half Marathon Race Report
This is my last half marathon for the year and my last chance this year to hit my goal time of 1:25. It was great that I live just 5-10 min's walk from the race site (it was on campus) though I still had to get up at 4:45 am for breakfast since it started at 7:30 am. It was a cold, overcast morning...temps were in the sub 40 range and I decided to abandon my initial idea of racing in a singlet and chose a long sleeve shirt instead.
The course was basically 2 loops (1st: 11.1 km, 2nd: 10 k) and was mostly flat, sprinkled with a few small and gradual hills.
I decided to start out conservative in the first loop and work my way up in the 2nd half of the race. Well, I felt I was too slow in the beginning despite the fact that I did pick up the pace substantially during the second half of the race. My 1st few splits (3k) were way off my planned splits (13:15 for the 1st 3k when I was aiming for a sub 13) partly because of the crowded start and partly because I was too complacent? Anyways I found a guy to pace with during the first half of the race...I picked it up after the 9 k mark and I didn't see him again (apparently according to him, he had a big blister on his left foot and had to slow down substantially...he finished in 1:41). My 10k split was 42:53 and I was passing people like crazy in the 2nd half....had a strong finish as well with a final kick towards the end (despite a cramp in my calf just a few yards away from the finish)...however I realized that the too-slow start had cost me a few minutes in the end...at least I know what to work on: a more aggressive start. The plus side was that I did PR by another minute on this race compared to October's half with a chip time of 1:27:15 (6:40 pace)...2 mins off my goal time but still decent...
Placing:
24/531 overall
9/34 in M20-29 AG
23/245 in male division
winning time was 1:06 something
Splits:
3: 13:15
4: 4:02
5: 3:58
6: 4:04
7: 4:18
8: 4:30
9: 4:31
10: 4:11
11: 3:42
12: 4:28
13: 4:00
15: 7:54
17: 7:47
18: 4:01
21.1: 12:28
Total Time: 1:27:15
Note: Some of the later splits look way off pace because of the uphills and downhills on the course...this is probably the weirdest set of splits I've seen so far...
In terms of review, here's a brief summary of the 3 halfs I've ran this year:
2nd Feb: 1:37:09 (my 1st one)
17th Oct: 1:28:24
21st Nov: 1:27:15
Not bad considering I improved by 10 mins from my 1st to my 3rd half...Hopefully the trend continues next year..although I know I will have to work harder now to bring down my time by this much.

Wow Tim!
Great job in improving your time so much in one year! I am sure that as you race more you will find a more comfortable initial pace. Good Luck.
