Just a few minutes ago I saw a clip of an upcoming news story for next week. The clip showed people saying "I don't get all the privilages of someone that is married." "I don't get a tax break like married people do." "My significant other can't make decisions for me if I am hospitalized." So, obviously, I was expecting the news story to be about homosexuals. Am I wrong in assuming that? I hear those exact comments being made pretty routinely from the people fighting for homosexual rights. Matter of fact, even on ER this week I heard something similar in regards to Carrie having to tell her birth mom about her homosexual lifestyle.
But wait...this upcoming news story was nothing of the sort. This news story was about SINGLE people (in what they call "committed" relationships)!!! Now, I was single for many years (32) but I would never demand to have the same rights as a married couple. I mean, isn't that the whole reason you stay single? So you don't have to act/be/etc like a married couple? Yes, I am "old-fashioned," but my suggestion is that if you want the rights of someone that is married then go take the vows! Otherwise, you shouldn't have the same rights as married couples.
BTW, Who is the next "couple" to demand rights? You can't just go around allowing every couple that wants to have these specified rights. Otherwise, you will have people who aren't committed* to each other making decisions for you on the hospital bed.
*I say they aren't committed because if they were they would show it by taking the next step to marry.

If that is what the civil union people want? What do you expect? Everyone wants rights and recognition these days.
I have said this before. There is no right that "committed" couples cannot have that cannot be drawn up by a lawyer or have a hospital, etc change their policy on (as long as proper documentation can be given). If the "committment" means that much then get the documents you need. Just like a will and life insurance for every person.
For heterosexual couples it can be made easier by saying "I do." If you want the benefits, then make the committment. That is the mature thing to do.
If benefit rights are given to homosexual couples, technicially people living together, even those engaged can have a valid argument to recieve benefits. That I believe is next.
Until the laws change regarding marriage that is the way it is. I actually support the right of homosexual couples to make decisions like husband and wife do, butthey as I, still have to do the legal paper work as well. It would actually be fairly easy for a hospital for example to allow the "commited partner" of anyone as long as there is documentation.
It also is not fair that there is a marriage pentalty in taxes.
There are a lot of things that may not seem "fair" to people but until laws change, rules are rules. This is a republic, people can make petitions and have laws changed.

Wahh wahh wahh, I'm an idiot so I don't have the same rights.
Please spare me the psyco babble BS and do the right thing. Either get married and have the privledge, or SHUT UP.
Homosexuals do not fall into that catagory. I think what the Gov. Is doing to them is wrong. They should be able to make a committment and enjoy the same rights as hetero.

If I ever get divorced, I will never ever get remarried and I will never ever whine about my rights as a non-married person. If I find someone after divorce to spend the rest of my life with, we'll have the necessary paperwork for that person to make some decisions for me in the event I am unable to, and also have an easy out for both of us if it doesn't work.
I'd love to be single. It's financially beneficial to me to be a single mother going to college.

exactly. and idiots like this one can only hurt the argument of a committed same-sex couple. I guess I have a hard time with the insurance and benefits being denied to homosexuals when in the past we recognized common law
